the mayor says it has worked in san diego and is optimistic it will work here as well. this is becoming a common site. police responding to the creek behind watson park for a disturbance call near an encampment. the mayor says the park has been problematic. we had a lot of neighbors come out and say that they just didn't feel safe in their park anymore. but a new program aims to change that. on a walking tour today, the mayor showed us a piece of land the city is leasing next to watson park to put in what he calls a safe sleeping site, perhaps 100 tents where the unhoused could gather and stay for an extended period. priority will be given to the unhoused, who already live in the same neighborhood, with the goal of ultimately providing the tools those people need to get off the street. they can start to focus on drug treatment, job training, reconnecting with family, just basically stabilizing and starting to turn their lives around. at least one park visitor likes the idea. yeah, anything to support the homeless. there will be security on site, and there are rules for those who use it. no drugs or weapons a
