by 1960, almost all of the 10,000 african-americans in the san fernando valley lived in my community. this community became the center of african-america life in the san fernando valley. it was known as california's first black suburb. one of the examples was the development of the joe lewis homes. these homes were the only hope and opportunity for african-americans to have home ownership. they were named after the heavyweight boxing championship. joe lewis had little or nothing to do with these real estate ep investments. but from this, african-americans set a foundation of the beautiful community that i call home. it is a history filled with heartbreak and tragedy, hope and inspiration. the plaque history is a thread that keeps our community together. i would like to use this opportunity to spotlight community leaders that are the cornstone of our history. religious leaders like the broad asfamily. it is embed by the reverend and his family. reverend hillary t.brodas and he helped organize the san fernando are family chapter and led efforts to build hubber h. humphrey center. he own
