have jobs -- ensures 40,000 san franciscans have jobs. we have an opportunity to get paid not just for this year and future projects, four years in the future. i know many people who have been advocating that program. and thanks to many of you have worked closely with me to close one of the state's biggest tax loopholes, proposition 13. none of the people in this office are shocked, but i am shocked at how few people realized that every single building gets subsidized by proposition 13, regardless of how big or small they are. unfortunately, we have had to pay the price. we have seen a huge shift from who pays property taxes. 30 years ago, over 60% of property taxes were paid by commercial retailers. today, it is 43%. so the thing that we passed to protect home owners is now subsidizing somebody else. we felt that a fact. that meant higher fees at the university of california, state university, university college. it has meant fewer classroom -- larger classroom sizes for people k-12. it has also meant that we have cut our social contract

i suspect every other san franciscan would do likewise. he told me the city attorney's office would do what would need to be done to make sure that we would have the opportunity to do it. he said there were some people already pledged on the foundation side to be a part of the effort. obviously, it is going to take lots of hard work, but it is, frankly, a joy to be part of maintaining, and hopefully, perpetuating one of the flagship cultural institutions in this city. this city is about culture. this city is about pride in ethnic heritage. this city is about an appreciation of the extraordinary talents of people on the arts side and to have 6000-year-old pieces that you can see no other place in the world come and to have the collection here -- you understand the brundage collection could have been dropped anywhere in the world. he chose us to be a caretaker of those 17,000 pieces -- whatever the number happens to be. we can do no less than justify that by being successful at raising what dennis tells me this summer in the neighborhood of

for i suppose now for a month or month and a half, and the amount of people who come, regular san franciscans who would like to see the america's cup come to san francisco and who are actively participating and trying to help us finance it and actually get it to san francisco -- i do not think we can thank them all enough. there is the city staff, carry mcclellan, jennifer mattes, brad benson, monique moyer. the port has been remarkable. i would say the former port commissioner, we have great assets at the port of san francisco, but they are slowly starting to fall into the water. as we have seen with pierre 30/32, it has the shelf life of another, i think, 10 years. without some kind of revitalization, we could lose this asset. it is the same as you go down the port of sand and cisco. the america's cup gives us a great opportunity to rebuild that, to bring economic not just viability but a thriving economic community back to san francisco bay, so i would like to thank everyone who has been part of that. i would be remiss without thanking mark buell, who is heading the acoc, and also lucy, on

jonathan was an artist whose personal story can inspire all san franciscans to become their best when making the most of their individual talents. jonathan was told he would not make enough money to support himself. he traveled to new york and learned the skills of photography, painting, and eventually engineering. this man became a technical illustrator who worked to design the lunar module, designed in ejection seats from fighter planes and solved numerous problems. all the while his sensational -- insatiable quest made him a collector of rare items from stamps and coins to pocket knives. jonathan moved to san francisco asking the children to search for the perfect place. he is the sort of san franciscan who not only loves the city but also understood and appreciated its unique beauty and wonderment. it is with heavy heart that his wife and two remaining sons and their family bid farewell to this husband and father. i want to say my family's thoughts and prayers are with the family. abraham is a remarkable person and someone i respect greatly, so it is with great condolence we will

i am very proud to see that level of interest and involvement on the part of san franciscans. we have gone through quite an interesting ride in the last few weeks. i am glad to say this is almost coming to an end. when i nominated mike hennessey three days ago, as i indicated at the time, i did so in the spirit of trying to bring this board together, and trying to find someone that we could all get behind, and specifically mike hennessey, because the mayor himself had indicated that he was comfortable with mike hennessey serving in that role, and because the other supervisors on this board indicated that they would support mike hennessey. i don't really know what happened between the time that those representations were made and the actual vote took place. one thing that i will say is that, in my humble opinion, mike hennessey, who is a resident of my district, with all due respect to everyone involved, did not deserve or does not deserve the kind of treatment that he has received. i think that he is one of the most distinguished public servants that we have had in san francis

i'm a third-generation san franciscan. my mother is from the sunset. my father is from the mission. irish background. i spent most of my career as a lawyer as a prosecutor. the last five years or so, pursuing san francisco homicide cases. before that, i was a police officer. i spent most of my career around officers and law enforcement, and i really enjoyed my job serving san francisco in this way. [applause] commissioner kingsley: i joined the police commission about three-four months ago. i have lived in san francisco for approximately 30 years. i practice law as it is this transaction lawyer for about 25 or so years. over the last seven or so, i have been doing commercial mediations. i've lived in a number of areas in the city, including this one, for a number of years. it was wonderful coming back this evening and seeing a lot of old haunts. thank you very much for hosting this meeting this evening. it is good to see you here, and thank you for coming.
