. >> reporter: san franciscans balked -- walked out of one horror to the other. >> he said toya look at san francisco burn. and the sky the whole sky was red, red as a beautiful sunset. >> reporter: but was a disaster for adults adults was an adventure for children. >> dad took us to the top of the fairmont. from there we saw four big fires at 10:00 in the morning. big fires. >> reporter: men formed volunteer groups to fight the fires and got a nasty surprise. san francisco's water system was entirely inadequate to the task. gist to name one problem the -- just to name one problem, the city has prepared by building wooden tanks that held thousands of gallons of water. >> when the earthquake came the tanks had split and the water went out. the water they just went around blasting things. they decided that they can't put out the fire and the fire was getting closer to the buildings, you know. >> reporter: as the fires approached their homes, thousands of san franciscans fled. many just taking their clothes. >> because they were scared of the fire. the fire was getting closer and closer.

san franciscans during campaigns read everything they are sent in the mail. love to meet candidates. a gauge with them in conversations. i also learned how important it is to build bridges between communities, particularly communities of diversity we have. i was just incredibly honored to have been elected in november 2008. my district really encompasses the ethnic and economic diversity that exists throughout the city. as a result, i think my district is really emblematic of the entire city. you can find every political perspective that you could possibly want in district 3. so oftentimes, the interest of my district and the city really are quite a line, so i do not have to think about this difference is probably quite as often as some of my colleagues may have to. i in particular want to thank the mayor for his decision to protect our nutrition programs. this is something that i think we all believe is incredibly important at a time when we have seen massive federal and state cuts, for us to hold the line locally and stand up in the city of st. francis for

"i left my heart in san francisco" was written by my cousin. i was educated at san francisco state. i have a degree in chemistry and biochemistry and i am also a dentist. as to my qualifications, i served on two previous boards, on the board of golden gate yacht club that is during the america's cup now. i also served on the board of the olympic club. i am very passionate about water issues. i spent my youth backpacking and camping in the area around the hetch hetchy, around cherry lake and i know this area very well. i know the system -- i will not say i am an expert. i know the system from studying it just for fun. i used to know all the flows and the politics and i could get caught up with that as time goes on. if elected to this position, i would be -- bring out passion to this. i believe in water systems. i believe in what is going on with the city of san francisco, what they're doing with their water system. is magnificent. it was developed over 100 years ago. it still works fine

i am a sixth generation san franciscan who lives and raised his children here in san francisco. the purpose of this hearing is to pass the eir report. i apologize to the parks and recreation commission people who have not heard much talk about the shallows through the park, which is there -- their portion of it, although it is a very minimal shadow cast from all the reports i have heard. i will miss the fact that i can easily park on hickey walk because it is a ghost town. when i go downtown, i drive right to that spot where the tennis club is, because i know there's a spot available to me almost every time of the day, because that area is not used at all. the environmental impact of that is right now is far worse than any impact that is going to come from this fabulous development that will create jobs. the stranglehold that is held on all these projects that come before you through every single step of the way -- e.r. are -- eir , planning commission, board of supervisors, that hold up the job for years and years and years, that keeps workers from working, keeps revenue from b

[applause] that is wonderful data for san franciscans because guess what? for quite some years now, it has been deficit, deficit, deficit, no increase, revenues going down, all the bad news that have been shared year after year with our department heads and all of you know how wonderfully- negative the discussion has been and now we see some positive light. i stand before you a year in office to say that san francisco -- economic recovery is real and underway and the economic policies and the strategies we pursued are working and they're working well. our city could not do this without the partnerships of many of you who are here today. san francisco is back on track we must stay the course. what i mean is even though our revenues have surged from the economic growth that our tech companies have provided and traditional companies who have been here for so many years, let me do this. i know that i have been known as the tech mayor and i want to share that with the board and officials but i also want to say one of the reasons i come here so enthusiastically t

i am a native san franciscan. i urge you to support this project for a number of reasons. a, it creates a lot of jobs. we have a developer that is ready to go on it. to, we talked about the height limit. before 1989 with the embarcadero freeway was there, if it was blocking your view. what you have now is a lot better than that. plus, change is part of what is going on in this city. without change, we would be stagnant. i urge you to pass this project. thank you very much. good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen of the planning commission. i am an engineer working in this city and living in the city for 55 years. i am also a commissioner at the board of examiners. and at my hearings we have 10 people, not a crowd, so i do not envy you. this year will be my 30th year on the board of examiners. i have worked and lived in san francisco near the embarcadero. my first job was admission and fremont, and then i moved to market. also, i was a member of golden gate way tennis and swim club and gave up tennis when i could not see the ball anymore. i urge you to approve the eir so final

not just our congregation, but all walks of san franciscans come to our kitchens. a lot of people find their faith in the house of worship were shipping. what i have learned in that kitchen is that, for many people, their prayer is they're doing the work of their hands and giving back to our community. thanks a lot for the opportunity. [applause] [applause] president chiu: our final presentation that they will be provided by our district 8 colleague, supervisor wiener. supervisor wiener: when i took office, i knew there were a lot of responsibilities. one thing that i did not anticipate was the number of fires that we would have to deal with in our district. it was just a horrible thing. about one month after i took office, an arsonist got loose and started dumping garbage on the front porch of people's houses and setting it on fire in the middle of the night. people were trapped in their homes. there were five or six of them. it got to the point that i was dreading when our fire chief's name would come on my phone at 5:00 in the morning. in the middle of the year,

i am a born and raised san franciscan. more important, i represent district 2. i grew up in the marina district close to the palace of fine arts. my parents still live in the same set of plants that i live in. i went to grammar school here. i went to st. ignatius here. i am a proud wild cat. i went to college at loyola- marymount university in los angeles. i had a scholarship to play baseball. i remember coming down here to christie field, when my dad was in the military, seeing how the beaches have transformed into but we have today. you cannot beat the views, of course. it just holds summoning memories and i can come here with our kids, our family. i ended up going to ireland to get a master's degree at the university college of dublin. i went back to the states and went to law school at university of pennsylvania. then i came back, and choosing to live in san francisco was natural to me. when you are a child, you do not realize what you had until you leave home. i had the opportunity to live in los angeles, abroad in ireland, and there is no place like home,

i am a native san franciscan. basically a native of district 5. i speak to you tonight in the context of the community unity map. i want to talk about district 5. i want to raise two points. both of which were raised at the ivers cultural center but i want to repeat them. there has been some concern in the inner sunset which has historically worked closely with folks in the haight in dealing with golden gate park and in dealing with the university of california medical center because it impacts our lives on a regular basis. it was suggested the university of california had asked to be put into one district. dennis santinori had double checked and found the administration does not want the university placed in one district, district 7. i do not know where that came from. he has double checked and he will be writing the tube. we would prefer that it remained in split and that is what the university wants to be, in multiple districts. in any case if you were to put it in one, put it in five. the second issue is that in the course of attempting to sat

we want to get more companies in san francisco to hire san franciscans. and so we're going to develop initiatives around that. there is a big mismatch in the qualifications of those who are not employed in san francisco versus the jobs the tech community wants to hire and we will job that -- bridge that with job training. we have a plan around that. we think employment will solve a lot of the social ills in san francisco. we're focused on jobs. later this year, sf city will dip its toe in policy initiatives. we're watching closely the proposals that will be coming out of the mayor's office around tax reform. twitter stays in san francisco. it was not a bluff. i am the one who ran to city hall and said, it are going to lose this company if you do not do something. that is how i started the friendship with adlai. i did not know this person at all. -- that is how i started the friendship with ed lee. >> it was surreal for me, maybe you guys to when we were looking at the slides and a survey earlier this morning and it was showing that homelessness and jobs an

you were all san franciscans. i assume you all know where it is. we are in other segments of the community that is opposed to this project. definitely concerned about the height. another project that adds to the canyon affect along the embarcadero, just like the restaurants and the ballpark and the fact that it is not creating housing for the people of san francisco. i would like to address some of the myths that seem to continue about projects like these that the jobs are going to create economic prosperity for the city and the tax revenue will bring in lots of money. the worst one of all, the developers do not seem to be able to stop complaining that there is this horde of opposition for every project that once to be built in the city. using up my street as a random sample, i have lived on howard street for 21 years. if you walk down howard street from the water going west, there are more big projects, either built or in the works then you can count. there are scores of them. hi-rise office building, condo buildings, hotels. you name it. how many

yesterday during the bike ride i noticed that the americans, the san franciscans who cycled with us, they met a lot of fans. they were constantly waving and saying hi, hello, and how are you? and in a car, well, with the speed you're going, it's difficult to recognize who you're approaching and to say hi, the car is on the next block. on the bicycle you can see each other, wave, call each other in the evening saying well, what were you doing at the wiggle? economic benefits -- well, all these benefits i mentioned are also to be translated into economical benefits. as was mentioned, for the shopkeepers, the psychists are very good. at -- cyclists are very good. at first they don't didn't know because they see the huge trolleys with lots of growsies getting into the supermarkets with lots of cars. with you -- but surveys showed that car customers just come once a beak and bicyclists come every day and every day they spend $20. if they come six days that's $120. and the family trolley, that huge car is worth $80. so cyclists are good for shopkeepers and we are getting in a system of awa
