[applause] chairperson avalos: think you very much. next speaker, please. >> good afternoon, chairman and members of the committee. i am jim salinas, a native san franciscan, born and raised in the mission district. i am now passed the half century mark and lived here my whole life. let me say you will hear a lot of lame excuses as to why this legislation cannot or will not work. that is all they are. it is the outsiders and carpetbaggers that are here telling the stakeholders' like myself, folks that have lived here all our lives. please make no mistake that the communities are not only suffering from high unemployment, but displacement as well. i know too many brothers and sisters who have had to leave their city of perth. they are living in antioch, pittsburgh, and to go. anywhere but where there were born. that is not right. i am an anomaly now. i should be the norm. everybody should go to work here. i got to work every day with the tools of the trade, buy a home, raised four kids

jonathan was an artist whose personal story can inspire all san franciscans to become their best when making the most of their individual talents. jonathan was told he would not make enough money to support himself. he traveled to new york and learned the skills of photography, painting, and eventually engineering. this man became a technical illustrator who worked to design the lunar module, designed in ejection seats from fighter planes and solved numerous problems. all the while his sensational -- insatiable quest made him a collector of rare items from stamps and coins to pocket knives. jonathan moved to san francisco asking the children to search for the perfect place. he is the sort of san franciscan who not only loves the city but also understood and appreciated its unique beauty and wonderment. it is with heavy heart that his wife and two remaining sons and their family bid farewell to this husband and father. i want to say my family's thoughts and prayers are with the family. abraham is a remarkable person and someone i respect greatly, so it is with great condolence we will

it gives me tremendous pride as a san franciscan first and foremost, as mayor of this city, that our san francisco girls chorus and our san francisco boys chorus have been picked for this historic event. it is an extraordinary privilege that we collectively are being afforded. but all of these young men and women in the back are being afforded. and to all of families and friends, i know that this is something you will never forget. as a san franciscan to see san francisco speaker nancy pelosi up there with senior senator diane feinstein front and center in this, and our boys and girls chorus -- [applause] i know not everyone of the same political persuasion. but yes, the president that we have chosen, which we chose wisely from my humble perspective.
