i suspect every other san franciscan would do likewise. he told me the city attorney's office would do what would need to be done to make sure that we would have the opportunity to do it. he said there were some people already pledged on the foundation side to be a part of the effort. obviously, it is going to take lots of hard work, but it is, frankly, a joy to be part of maintaining, and hopefully, perpetuating one of the flagship cultural institutions in this city. this city is about culture. this city is about pride in ethnic heritage. this city is about an appreciation of the extraordinary talents of people on the arts side and to have 6000-year-old pieces that you can see no other place in the world come and to have the collection here -- you understand the brundage collection could have been dropped anywhere in the world. he chose us to be a caretaker of those 17,000 pieces -- whatever the number happens to be. we can do no less than justify that by being successful at raising what dennis tells me this summer in the neighborhood of

have jobs -- ensures 40,000 san franciscans have jobs. we have an opportunity to get paid not just for this year and future projects, four years in the future. i know many people who have been advocating that program. and thanks to many of you have worked closely with me to close one of the state's biggest tax loopholes, proposition 13. none of the people in this office are shocked, but i am shocked at how few people realized that every single building gets subsidized by proposition 13, regardless of how big or small they are. unfortunately, we have had to pay the price. we have seen a huge shift from who pays property taxes. 30 years ago, over 60% of property taxes were paid by commercial retailers. today, it is 43%. so the thing that we passed to protect home owners is now subsidizing somebody else. we felt that a fact. that meant higher fees at the university of california, state university, university college. it has meant fewer classroom -- larger classroom sizes for people k-12. it has also meant that we have cut our social contract

in addition to the environmental impact, though, this has a real cost to san franciscans. the total cost to dispose of or recycle foam books in san francisco is estimated to be over $1 million a year. this is a cost borne by residents and ratepayers. the ordinance i am interested in using would allow all phone book distributors to distribute yellow pages to any san franciscan resident who wants them. it would also allow distributors to contact every resident the it -- via mail, phone, or e-mail so anyone who wants a phone book can have an opportunity to receive it. this ordinance, though, does not allow distributors to leave unwanted yellow pages in front of buildings or doorways without permission. this lot is not a ban on yellow pages. we simply want to make sure that everyone who wants the information can get it, and it is good for business. businesses will know that they are paying to advertise to actual customers instead of to a giant circulation number which does not represent the truth of who is actually using these phone books. if we are serious about our environmen

examples, but it gets real when we get our bill in the mail, and what of the good things for san franciscans, we have very affordable water and sewer rates, but part of the reason is that we have deferred maintenance over the past 25 years, and now, it does have to be some fairly large numbers. we have run the scenarios but look at the average bill and looks at how rates would have to change as well as the affordability index, which is similar to what the u.s. environmental protection agency does when they determine affordability for water and sewer improvements, so keep in mind, our average monthly water right now is about $32 a month, and our average monthly super bowl xli family resident is about $51 a month, so as we walk through these slides, that will be a helpful frame of reference. the average monthly water bill would be $32 a month. and the average monthly sewer bill would be $51 a month. so about $1 a day for 24-sloven water and less than $2 per day for the past 24/7 sewer. we have done a similar analysis, but we have shown what that means for rate changes every year over the next

now, all san franciscans recycle, but there is still a desperate need for more redemption centers in san francisco. state law requires that consumers be refunded their deposits for beverage containers. sustaining the earth's biological system cannot be accomplished without native plants. therefore, a native plant nursery was created at the recycling center. we propagate over 60 species of san francisco native plants to support native birds, insects, and other wildlife. the nursery supplies plans to numerous gardens and habitat restoration projects throughout the city, including green schoolyards, mission greenbelt, butterfly quarter, and many reckon park projects. we have planted over an acre of native plant gardens adjacent to the recycling center and keysar , and we are helping -- hoping to do more. soil is made from compost on site. monthly workshops along with tours for school groups complement the nursery. supervisor mirkarimi: thank you. >> we need more negotiations. there will be over 3000 jobs created as a result of the lalre our local hire san franciscans.es a long way to one of -- hiring more of our great people in everything we do. over 10% of the contractors are local businesses already working on the contract, with more to come. this hospital is the busiest emergency room in the city. and because of this rebuild, it will triple in the size of a number of emergency rooms that it has, and it will be equipped to double the capacity of to 120 beds. with the size of the hospital being rebuilt, with the seismic standards it will have, with the way we approach that as a city family with our great private leaders in the sector joining the city, i cannot but repeat to you -- this hospital and the foundation that it has had to help it is the heart of the city and county of san francisco. that is why i enjoy this. if there is anything i know this year even these first few weeks on the job, my love for the city has grown even deeper. thank you very much for being part of this. we've been looking at fees over and over, nickel-and-diming san franciscans in the process. this is one that i hope all of us can support. i was talking with rachel gordon. she had done a survey of people who use the botanical gardens. many of them felt that they actually turn themselves away or that they decided not to for dissipate. i do believe the fee creates a chilling effect on people's enjoyment of the park, and eliminating it would ensure again that people could have no barrier to entering the park whatsoever. it has really taken probably the fee itself forced to realize how nice it is for us to not have one. in rejecting the fee back in 2009, i have been inspired by joni mitchell, in her song "big yellow taxi." she said, "we took all the trees and put them in a tree museum and charge the people a dollar and a half just to see them." that inspired me not to approve the fee in 2009, but i have another part i want to quote -- "don't it always seemed to go that we do not know what we've got until it's gone?" supervisor mirkarimi: hard to follow that, but i have to say t

he was a well-known san franciscan who will be sorely missed. >> i am introducing legislation to address some of the issues and have seen around economic development and job growth. this is a quarter that has long been neglected was for my district. the sunset addresses and job growth -- and it offers a six- year tax exemption to net new jobs in the city of san francisco how to businesses that are willing to move to midtown. this is an area that we've attempted to revitalize for decades. this has existing infrastructure. we have a bike lanes. there are many bus lines that run to the neighborhood. there are is also large vacant commercial real estate. we encourage innovative business activities in san francisco. this area has report and can absorb many new jobs. this is a partnership. this is a partnership where we help growing businesses and the businesses help the neighborhoods that need a support. we expect that this legislation will lead to a rise in property value. i would like to think the mayor's office who has been working on this legislation. we have been in negotiation over this
