san franciscans during campaigns read everything they are sent in the mail. love to meet candidates. a gauge with them in conversations. i also learned how important it is to build bridges between communities, particularly communities of diversity we have. i was just incredibly honored to have been elected in november 2008. my district really encompasses the ethnic and economic diversity that exists throughout the city. as a result, i think my district is really emblematic of the entire city. you can find every political perspective that you could possibly want in district 3. so oftentimes, the interest of my district and the city really are quite a line, so i do not have to think about this difference is probably quite as often as some of my colleagues may have to. i in particular want to thank the mayor for his decision to protect our nutrition programs. this is something that i think we all believe is incredibly important at a time when we have seen massive federal and state cuts, for us to hold the line locally and stand up in the city of st. francis for

she is proud to be a san franciscan. when she first started out, i was their day in and day out picking her because she did not have a car at the time. i believed in her from the first when she was at 200 pounds and had to drop down to 152 start fighting. to see her represent our community and our families the way she has is amazing and overwhelming sometimes. please keep her in your prayers as she goes to make history. she is excited. we're all excited and is an honor to be here to represent her today. she wishes she could be year and she told me to tell you to keep your fingers crossed and pay for her -- prefer. she will bring home that spot in the olympic trials. -- pray for her. it gives me tremendous pride as a san franciscan first and foremost, as mayor of this city, that our san francisco girls chorus and our san francisco boys chorus have been picked for this historic event. it is an extraordinary privilege that we collectively are being afforded. but all of these young men and women in the back are being afforded. and to all of families and friends, i know that this is something you will never forget. as a san franciscan to see san francisco speaker nancy pelosi up there with senior senator diane feinstein front and center in this, and our boys and girls chorus -- [applause] i know not everyone of the same political persuasion. but yes, the president that we have chosen, which we chose wisely from my humble perspective. while we were talking about about local hire ordinance, there was a great deal of talk about san franciscans getting jobs in the america's cup rollup and as it was going on as well. that was significant to me. i think that everyone felt that this was going to be an event that was going to be beneficial to so many parts of san francisco and so many communities, from the business community, sailing committee, arts community, construction workers, folks from all different neighborhoods as well. so this hearing is really to get a sense of where we can still get to. to also acknowledged the movement that has happened. i know we have mike martin from the office of economic and workforce development, and i know there is a presentation today. before we start, i know one of the last remaining things that we talked about is extending the spirit of the local hire ordinance to this event. another has been a great deal of talk about what we have, a goal of hiring local residents, and we have steps to get there. but the goal has been -- it resembles very much our first source program, based on good faith
