>> take us back to those years, the average san franciscan of that time, what do you think they knew? >> i think they were pretty confused. there may be some awareness that it was a political force, especially in city hall's. he was on the housing authority, came to meetings. a couple of buses would pull up, he would show up, there would be enormous thunderous clapping for approval of the minutes. this guy ran the show. there were news stories towards 1977, 1978 towards his influence, questions about his background. people, even his allies, knew there was something off about the guy in terms of how they dealt with in. milk was a big fan publicly, but i'm not sure he knew better. there were others walking the landscape now took part in it, too. kind of saw the dark side and went along with it. >> one of our questions is that the chronicle wasn't doing its job. marshall is the best person to testify. he finally found a way to get that story out. the city editor, because he was compromised by jones, was basically spiking the stories. people were being compromised. people in politics and

a recent poll commissioned by todd go last week showed that 60% of san franciscans are very concerned that rent is due out. 62%. another 15% is somewhat concerned that rent is due. only 3% in the poll stated it was not a concern are not very concerned. overwhelming number of those that took this poll also stated if they had to move today that they would not be able to afford to live in san francisco. there's a pervasive sense were using the city that we love one community at a time. but we do not have to the city they used to be-what used to be san francisco is inevitable. i believe that with political will and community support we can save the soul of our city over the past few years have been successful moving for new affordable housing production and demanding developers make room for the rest of us as a profit from building new housing overall and proud my district has created more affordable housing than any the part of the city and in fact we are building over 50%. we need more supply of all kinds of housing to meet the growing demand generated by those moving here and we've don

that is what being a san franciscan is all about, isn't it? it is our values. to be fully able to achieve this vision i'm inviting a group of national experts to advise how to create and set the mandate for this new department. i have spoken to president obamas point person on homelessness, matthew dorty and he agreed to come out and advise and has the expertise of looking at programs across the country to see what works. we want to be egressive on this but want to be practical at the same time. how will we define sausking street homelessness? what are the investments we are making and how can we double down on this? is there something that we can be doing that we are not already doing? i aults want to invite the local homeless coordinating board to serve as a formal advisory body during the process. we convened san franciscos best and brightest on that commission and definitely need your input. i invite all of you here, every one of you, the people working hard every day day in and out to join in defining the new effort as well because i'll present this plan w
