he was a native san franciscan, born on november 15, 1951 and grew up in the excelsior. he was the first generation of his family to be born in san francisco. his father, jose, came here from the age of 18 from puerto rico and his mother francis came here from mexico at a young age. he graduated from balboa high school and started attending community college with plans to become a history teacher. life intervened and fate brought him to the love of his life. tony and his wife later raised their family. tony served our city through his many associations in the community and through his union, local 483. he was a longtime delegate and elected officers of the san francisco building and construction trade council and an active delegate of the 46 labor council. he served as vice president for the san francisco fire commission and as assembly delegate to the california democratic party. he was as an active participant in the st. vincent depaul society as well as many other services oriented organizations. he led his life by example and showed his children how service and belief

i learned that some san franciscans are not so accepting. throughout my academic career, most of my students or faculty were either asian or white. most of the time, i was the only black kid in my class. i did not know my skin was a factor until first highlighted by my 1st grade teacher. during spirit week, there were many fun days, one of them being crazy hair day when kids came in with you guessed it crazy hair-dos. even my teacher walked in with a wig on. when i wanted to try it on, she told me, your hair is too greasy. i had never scrutinized the nature of my hair although i knew it was different from that of my classmates. so i grabbed a water bottle and tried hard to get the grease out of my hair. i had no idea such incident would form my academic career. in middle school, my peers called me racial slurs. but i guess it's prepared me for the biggest beast of all lowell high school. as a freshman i was in and out of the dean's office relaying how kids repeatedly asked if i wanted to eat all the chocolate because i'm black. i also had te

now it's been hard, but two thirds of san franciscans have been vaccinated. as we begin to reopen, we want to keep people safe, and we are hopeful, jennie lam, that we are going to get the schools open this fall because i don't know about you, but i'm sure that many of the parents are ready to see their children go back to school. now what we're announcing today is going to be really incredible, and it has a lot to do with so many women expressing concerns about leaving one industry to go work in the other. if they were working in the hospitality industry, it's, like, this is the sector that i'm working in, but the hospitality industry was devastated during the pandemic, so how do we provide ways for people to shift? so part of the announcement today is focusing on getting people prepared to shift from various industries in san francisco. so we're announcing 300 opportunities that will help women in the hospitality sector, in the construction sector, in the tech sector, and a number of industries where whatever we choose to do, because we know we are women an
