we need to do a lot in san francisco to encourage young people and young families to stay in san franciscoi think we are missing out on a lot of our diversity when young families leave our city. we need to do all we can to be mindful of the needs of young families in the city. we mentioned housing. schools are a big deal. but also being able to be flexible with transportation and children. >> what is happening with crime in your district? give me your thoughts on how you think the police are doing with respect to crime in your district? >> i think we are very fortunate in district two. we have a number of great police captains that oversee the stations that touched district two. richmond and northern are the two major police stations that touched the district. we do have a lot of crime in district 2. both crimes against individuals but also against merchants along our merchant corridors. chestnut. union in particular has been hit. fillmore and sacramento. it is a big deal. we also have the break-ins. we need to be very mindful that people keep their iphones and laptops out of sight. but it

i want to make sure that san francisco has a working class population. i want to make sure we do not take for granted because we are seen as more cosmopolitan, that that excuses us from not tackling issues of poverty, which there are still substantial pockets of it in san francisco. just by what others may argue. that to me obligates our requirement to make sure this city, being in its reputation of being forward thinking and progressive, learn to -- learn to make sure that that translates into economics so that this isn't a city just for those who could afford it. >> what do you feel like are some of the biggest issues facing your district? >> well, when i came into office in january 2005, a number of areas of our district, as you outlined in your opening statement, really confronted different neighborhoods in different ways. district five is by far one of the most interesting drawn districts of the whole city. my western border goes almost into the sunset. my eastern border is goss street, my northern border is california street, our southern border is

. >> i am from san francisco. i grew up in the local neighborhood. i did my under deprad wait work at fisk university, where i studied political science with a concentration in public administration and worked eight years largely in the public sector. then i earned a master's degree from carnegie melon in pittsburg, pennsylvania. i spent some time as assistant executive director for a non-profit. we did work if a lot of kids in the neighborhood. i have done fundraising for candidates and issues. i have experience with the federal reserve bank of san francisco. when i look around my neighborhood and see the changes that are happening, i so there is no neighborhood grocery store. i see that small businesses in particular are coming and going, and they haven't been able to really sustain themselves. from my work experience in working for the city in the mayor's office as well as in the non-profit, i had a good sense as to what some of the challenges were. when i look in the future, i could see more challenges coming.

san francisco has been doing all it can. i have been the head of recovery planning since the last mayor. it takes a lot of partnerships and good planning and a focus on the vulnerable aspects. like we are focusing on our soft story buildings in the bay area. we will continue to also have a healthy city. a healthy city is one that is not as vulnerable. and economically healthy city. the have to invest in our infrastructure. that is not only a debate in the bay area. is also a debate nationally. how do we make sure of our infrastructure, whether it is bridges or roads. >> [unintelligible] >> you will find it takes a lot longer to rebuild a city? what's it generally does take a lot longer -- >> is generally does take a lot longer to rebuild. you can expedite recovery. you can literally cut it in half. that is what we're trying to also instill in other cities that we talk with, exchanging information. recovery is about preparation. it is a mind-set that right now, i am actually educating residents of san francisco to think about

because san francisco is so young. -- because san francisco is so young, it is riddled by faults. i have a map that shows the faults across the bay area and san francisco. the granddaddy of all of these is the san andreas fault. it is the longest. it can generate the greatest earthquakes. >> it is just south of san francisco. it goes offshore down here. >> from my house to the fault is about 3 miles on average. >> the closest area in san francisco to the fault is this area here in the southwest part of the city. people said that the closer you are, there are conditions that exacerbate issues. >> the fault's effect on development depends on the fault type and soil component. the san andreas is the main fault. there is the hayward fault. the difference between the two is that the san andreas is predominantly offshore. the hayward fault actually crosses beneath populated areas and poses a larger threat. as we speak, there is a 67% probability of a major earthquake on one of these faults in the next 30 years. it is of major -- high probability. it is a magnitude 6.5. the 1906 was 7.9.

, as a common family. >> i consider myself someone who shares the progress of value that need san francisco's -- many san franciscans hold dear. >> i do believe that a majority of this board share the same progressive values, and i think there is a danger and an overly narrow definition of what is progressive. we have to remember that being progressive stance for values of inclusiveness, of tolerance, of acceptance, and we need to think hard about how we characterize various votes of either being within that definition or outside of that. >> before i ran for office, i worked in san francisco as a criminal prosecutor and a civil- rights attorney and really got to understand how much of a beacon to the rest of the world san francisco is for social justice. i also been spent a number of years helping to grow a small business, got to understand the innovative spirit here in san francisco. at night, i volunteered as a neighborhood association leader and also as the chair of an affordable housing organization and learned so much about the challenges facing our neighborhoods and facing a really spec

i am a resident of san francisco. a recreational swimmer and a san franciscan. i value the presence of the america's cup here. however, there are aspects that are concerning. one is aquatic park. it is a venue for kayaking, family outings, picnics, other things. is the only swimming and waiting beach in san francisco that is safe for children and is home to a vital senior citizen'' center, a maritime museum, and boating clubs, all of which are used by the local community. the draft eir does not take any of this into consideration. primarily in the area of the bay between the golden gate and the bridges -- the swimmers are important to many of the area of residence. -- residents. provisions for traffic and parking are vague at best. de -- they lack sufficient -- they are not specific. like i said, what do people do when they come to san francisco? they ride a cable car. >> california line starts in the financial district. people are coming down knobbhill. the cable car picks people up. takes them to work. >> there still is no other device to conquer these hills better than a cable car. nobody wanted to live up here because you had to climb up here. with the invention of the cable car, these hills became accessible. he watched horses be dragged to death. cable cars were invent in san francisco to solve the problem with it's unique, vertically challenged terrain. we are still using cars a century old >> the old cable car is the most unique thing, it's still going. it was a good design by then and is still now. if we don't do something now. it's going to be worse later. >> the cable cars are built the same as they were in the late 1800's. we use a modern machinery. we haven't changed a thing. it's just how we get there. >> it's a time consuming job. we go for the quality rather than the production. we take pride in our work and it
