i've lived in san francisco. i have worked hard to assist the often overlooked, the disenfranchised, pork, limited english-speaking population in san francisco. because this group is not in the popular voting bloc, it is not easy for them to access city hall or other nonprofit organizations. i can proudly say my hard work has resulted in these individuals who can now help themselves. i created jobs for struggling musicians in chinatown to promote their talent and bring truth back to chinatown and in all speech. i promoted the rich cultural music here in return for my efforts, i have become their leader. i can say that i have helped in a small way. small businesses because of the art and music from within the community. it has been a win-win situation for the artists, community residents and merchants. there are many issues equally pressing women of color, care, and is equally pressing in all the complexities surrounding it, to be frank. none of the other candidates are mentioning any of these important issues. i

i represent both san francisco and the san mateo. what i found is many individuals who used to live in san francisco do not anymore. they are in san mateo county. when you ask why, number-one, because quality of the public education that their kids were getting was not there. what did they do? they send their kids to private school. you can handle one child and public schoolone childtwo -- one child in public school, but two you cannot. the jobs were not there, so they had to move. finally, the cost of living, housing, those other variables we need to work on. we have to improve the quality of public education across the city, not just some areas or schools. you have to also provide additional money to developers to develop affordable housing. finally, we need the diversity of jobs. a variety of jobs that fit all qualifications. that is how you keep the middle class from leaving san francisco. >> thank you. [applause] >> i would do four things. at first, i would build more middle-class affordable housing in san francisco. right now w

we need to do a lot in san francisco to encourage young people and young families to stay in san francisco. i think we are missing out on a lot of our diversity when young families leave our city. we need to do all we can to be mindful of the needs of young families in the city. we mentioned housing. schools are a big deal. but also being able to be flexible with transportation and children. >> what is happening with crime in your district? give me your thoughts on how you think the police are doing with respect to crime in your district? >> i think we are very fortunate in district two. we have a number of great police captains that oversee the stations that touched district two. richmond and northern are the two major police stations that touched the district. we do have a lot of crime in district 2. both crimes against individuals but also against merchants along our merchant corridors. chestnut. union in particular has been hit. fillmore and sacramento. it is a big deal. we also have the break-ins. we need to be very mindful that people keep their iphones and laptops out of sight. but

my grandfather came to san francisco from sicily.e got his very first job at eight years old lighting street lamps at fisherman's wharf. he eventually bought himself a boat and by the time of the great earthquake in 1906, he had several fishing boats. when the fire began to destroy san francisco, he loaded neighbors on to the bow. it was on that last boat he was introduced to my grandmother as he led her into the fishing boat for safety. my grandfather met my grandmother, and together, they tried to rebuild a city. san francisco has given my family so much opportunity and i would like to make sure our city continues to be a city of opportunity for everyone. san francisco is a place for history and we honor our past. we have also always looked forward to the future. what was once a gold rush town -- we became a center of finance and business, and when technology became a driving industry in the world, we became a center for people looking to launch new companies and new ideas. as a supervisor, i've focused on a future and saw the need

the good news is that san francisco is resilient.nd we proved that we are competing and winning businesses, even in these tough economic times. san francisco is home to more than 1500 technology companies. 74 life science companies. more than 225 clean tech and green businesses. and that, my friends, translates into real estate. in the first six months of 2011, more than 4.6 million square feet of office space was leased4 in san francisco leased.6 million. 1.6 million square feet or biotech firms alone. new and expanding technology firms, names you have already heard and may yet have heard. autodesk, mozilla, ancestry.com, yammer, and of course twitter, like you have heard about before. the numbers show that innovation is the key driver of our san francisco economy. it shows that we are a city of innovation and dr. per number two dare to think big and to think outside of the box. -- and entrepreneurialism who dare to think big. there is gaining in cloud computing. san francisco is home to the companies and top leaders that we're putt

tonight, we are 50 years of the san francisco manila sister cities. there's a bridge that connects the thrill of the orient to the city by the bay. it is a bridge of ambassadors, one made of people whose roots and hearts and the pacific ocean. in april 1961, the city of seven cisco formally and stated a committee under the office of the mayor to become the preeminent cultural and economic [inaudible] between san francisco and manila, developing a system that promote closer ties between the cities. this year, the san francisco manila sister city committee represents -- celebrates its 50 year, marking five decades of service to our people. the san francisco bay area filipino american community salutes this milestone, a legacy of goodwill and true filipino american pride. >> representing the san francisco manila sister city committee, are defective chairman -- our de facto chairman. as you know san francisco was the first u.s. city to ban plastic check out bags over four years ago. that ban only applied to supermarkets and to pharmacy chains, and the ordinance helped to reduce plastic bag litter in san francisco as you heard by 18% which was a great victory. it also reduced contamination in our collective recyclables and compost. although we do take great pride in being the first city to have banned plastic bags in the u.s. and are pleased with the impact that the original ordinance made, plastic bags continue to be a problem in san francisco. i would like to highlight a couple of those concerns. plastic bags cannot be recycled through our curb side or pickup program do the economics and are still the largest and most costly contamination. there by continuing to pose a threat and a real obstacle. and then finally plastic bags are continuing to be a threat to marine and wildlife. a 2010 study named san francisco's mission creek as one of the most plastic bag choked waterways in its annual trash top survey. a

as a landlord in san francisco, we're very active landlords. have the ability to have time as tenants is pretty gratifying. we will see how the relationships go. but we hope we grow. we hope that we are attentive. i mean to have ideal tenants like this in our portfolio. we're active and aggressive in san francisco. we're a huge landlord now. we believe it. it is only here in soma. we believe in the marketplace and the people. we believe that is why we're here. it is a great way marketplace. our portfolio expertise is throughout california. this is a place that we see the most amount of growth. when we have pivotal tenants like that that want to grow in our portfolio, and makes guys like us to have our day-to-day jobs pretty easy. the fact a san francisco today is seen the evolution of growth from social media, technology, media entertainment right here in our backyard is really a positive sign for the future growth of employment growth, development growth, and future successful companies coming here. hudson is that it is here for the long haul.

the first four start-ups in san francisco are these. those are the four companies that have started. every three months, they're going to name four new companies to get the advantage of their common not only space, their introduction to angel investors and capital investors. i will be there in december when these companies make their first financial pitch to investors. they have some great ideas and some very serious marketing ideas that we're going to want to support. a company called china synergy. at the conference in july of this year, i announced that china synergy, which is a major chinese solar firm, decided to locate their north american headquarters in san francisco's financial district of this marks the fifth chinese solar company to locate in san francisco. that success for that organization that has been so collaborative, one that gavin newsom started and i get to continue, called china sf, an ambitious initiative focused on attracting the north american headquarters of chinese companies entering the u.s. market. tioga energ

his own right, to serve as mayor of san francisco.et me say, on a personal note, the day before the election, i was having coffee at my favorite cafe in glen park, and lost in my e-mail, whatever i was doing in the moment. all of a sudden, i hear some commotion and see the mayor coming in to shake hands with me. he was doing parts of his campaign stump. it is already a tradition, in a few months that he served as interim mayor, among the department heads, you cannot be incognito in this town, because the mayor will find you. maybe in a cafe or someplace else that you hang out. this mayor likes to be everywhere, likes to know everyone. that is what the city really needs, somebody who knows the city, knows what the city is all about, what the city wants. has got the kind of discipline, the kind of 7 to 9 scheduled to make it happen. he has already set an example, and we are all looking forward to a hold term of this with him. ladies and gentlemen, it gives me a great pleasure and it is my distinct honor to introduce mayor edwin lee, may

i want to make sure that san francisco, oakland, san jose, and the other counties lead the rest of the world. we have car share, zipcar, and other wonderful alternatives to owning a car or a second car. if you are going to own a car, let's make the car been neutral. we're going to do that anymore dedicated way. -- if you are going to own a car, let's make a carbon neutral car. we will tell president obama he can come in here and get rid of the suv's if he would like. [laughter] these are very important goals our city has created. we are committed to reducing our carbon emissions. we're committed to the 100% recycling goal of our city. thank you very much. [applause] >> we would not have been able to meet this goal without the strong support and constant urging at the top of the city. thank you for your support and pushing us all the time to meet this goal. the department that has really led the effort to push the city to meet these goals and work with partners to reach the goal of 12% below the 1990 levels is the department of the environment. to talk a little bit about the details of

just shy of 50% of a deputy sheriff in san francisco and san mateo. this is typically a lower-paid classification, so i think it is not so -- when you look at the patterns of when they live, it is interesting that they have a lot in contra costa county as well. very few in sonoma. very interesting. there was mention of registered nurses. we can do any of these groups that you like. we do a zip code run basically against employer records because some of the considerations when looking at first responder are that you actually might not need all of your people to be there right away, because let's say you called in all your firefighters because of a natural disaster, they need a place to work and a track to be on or a station to work out of. we're more concerned about the second shift toward the third shift and the fact that people might need to stay longer. those are considerations that i am sure respect of fire and police chiefs are taking into account in their disaster plans. it is not as urgent that they be there immediately, but they need to be buil

a good project for san francisco. but there are people all over san francisco who are opposed to it. as a candidate, i have heard a lot of dissent about it. i feel that now that we have the mayor's race going on, that we're using central subway as a wedge issue. it is playing havoc with money we can get from the federal government. a lot is at stake. we need to improve our entire muni system across san francisco. this is one phase we need to do now, linking that a. i support the project. i want to see more happening. balboa park. we need to figure that out and the sense that area. we need to get rapid transit in geary as well. [applause] >> my position is to from the other candidates. why? because we have to base decisions on facts. we have to have evidence-based findings before we can make conclusions. what is happening is this issue is becoming politicized. we have a grand jury that specifically found a serious design defects in this product was causing twice -- costing twice as much as originally planned. and the l

no solution presented prevents or mandates that an employee in san francisco joined healthy san franciscoey all can do it regardless of what might benefit is. i encourage any of my employees that i cannot give full-time health insurance to to join healthy san francisco. they can use their hra funds for that or not. that is their choice. i cannot make it happen. there is a perpetual conversation about a level playing field and the intent of the law. original intent was to provide health care access. i am in full favor of that. i do whatever i can. an unending pot of money that might pay for part of an appendectomy will not hurt as much -- will not help as much as an encouragement for employees that need it to use those funds to join healthy san francisco or get a policy with kaiser on their own. the level playing field is a myth. healthy san francisco covers 4000 out of 50,000 employees. let's just get a rational compromise that all businesses can manage and survive. thank you. supervisor chiu: thank you. next speaker. >> good afternoon, supervisors. i am the executive director for the gol

[cheers and applause] >> you know, it is hard to remember, but on the other hand, fairly easy to remember. the sadness in my heart and the despair i felt in july when i heard that the bill was vetoed by the governor and that come december 1, 55,000 californians would lose an adult day health care. i have been working and have had the opportunity to work with older adults for over four -- 40 years in that time, certainly and the beginning, there were not options for folks other than nursing homes. i remember watching grandparents go into nursing homes because there was nothing else for them. i remember being in a nursing home and listening to an older stoic farmer who cried every day because all he wanted was to go back to the farm because there was nobody there during the day because his family was in the field, so he had to stay at the nursing home. i remember working with two women who became very close friends here in san francisco who had, after 10 years in n

our road to san francisco is taking place now. our first taste, the first glimpse we will be able to share with everyone as august next year. we will be here for the america's cup world series. that event will take place over nine days to six weeks. there are table below events planned. we did not have the final date scheduled yet, but it will be announced shortly. after 2012, we will be back again in july of 201340 louis vuitton cup. you think of the america's cup world series almost as the regular season. the america's cup itself is the final that will take place over the three weeks in september. with the only caveat being that in america's cup sailing, the winner, the defender is automatically in the finals, so the united states will be in a final no matter what. we cannot get kicked out early, which is nice. she attended san francisco state university in 1971.a student teacher and has fought for at the studies while earning degrees in economics, a process that is, and social work. getting her degree, she met her husband. they have raised four children in the mission. in the 1980's, eva and other mission community activists to join together for the san francisco voter education and registration project. she'd been organized the great boycott committee. she served as regional manager and a spokesperson of that organization until 2002. in 1988, the ufw co-founder was brutally beaten here in san francisco by a police officer. as a leader, -- there is a happy ending to this story. after a three-year effort, she worked diligently with the college and to ensure justice for delores and to ensure there was a change in the san francisco police department policies regarding police reaction to legal social protests. in 1994, she organized the cesar chavez street coalition. to change the name of army street to cesar chavez street. she led a campaign to

we were actually founded in san francisco in the late 1980's. we have helped hundreds of local clients, start-ups, small names and big names. we have seen this acceleration in growth in the tech seen in san francisco, especially south of market. we needed a bigger space to move into. the interesting thing about us is that our growth depends on two things. one is enough clients locally to support the growth. in of tech startups. and the ability to hire quality people locally. we are our people as a consult the alleged insolvency. we have seen amazing growth in the tech industry. silicon valley has always been a great place to be. san francisco seems to have really taken off, especially in the local start-ups seecene over the last few years. it will continue to grow and will continue to exist for five plus years. in terms of hiring, i want to echo the previous statements about the quality of people that we find in san francisco. there is a war on talent with software developers. we continue to find amazing and motivated people. experience and pass
