of san francisco's city government. 78% say tourism makes san francisco a better place to live. 80% say that san francisco has a healthy balance of tourists and resident activity and 78% believe it's important to update and modernize the moscone center. that 78% is similar to the numbers that we heard for support of the arena. why expand? interestingly moscone is probably the most successful convention center in the united states. it's not the largest. but persquare foot, it's the most utilized. per square foot it generated the most hotel nights and most revenue of any convention center in the united states. so it's very significant in terms of economic impact. it's basically full-year round. a lost our groups are outgrowing it and need more space in order to stay in town and this benefits not only the tourist sector, but the business sector. it's no coincide that the apple 5 was unveiled there this week or oracle is having their meeting next week. it's the best way to generate more business. the economic impact of the center is significant. we have calculated that we have lost $2 b

we need to do a lot in san francisco to encourage young people and young families to stay in san francisco. i think we are missing out on a lot of our diversity when young families leave our city. we need to do all we can to be mindful of the needs of young families in the city. we mentioned housing. schools are a big deal. but also being able to be flexible with transportation and children. >> what is happening with crime in your district? give me your thoughts on how you think the police are doing with respect to crime in your district? >> i think we are very fortunate in district two. we have a number of great police captains that oversee the stations that touched district two. richmond and northern are the two major police stations that touched the district. we do have a lot of crime in district 2. both crimes against individuals but also against merchants along our merchant corridors. chestnut. union in particular has been hit. fillmore and sacramento. it is a big deal. we also have the break-ins. we need to be very mindful that people keep their iphones

here we are in san francisco. if we look at any of the forecasts over the next 20 years, up to a half of the population, 3.5 billion people, will live in cities. they will live in an urban environment. it is already happening in asia and south america where there is a migration toward the great cities of the world. that will bring more and more congestion into those cities. as an industry, as a company, we can view this as a challenging in that congestion is going to increase. at the same time, or on the other hand, you will have many other developments. we know we are all connected to date. we know sustainability is not just a term people use. people believe in it and the environmental challenges that come with that means that as a company, as a city and a country we have to work together to find the solutions to this. as we look into the future, we could say that the current model of the car industry needs to change. at the same time, we believe that individual mobility is what people desire. that does not mean

to what makes san francisco -- what makes people want to come to san francisco and live in this city. it is important to what we do and many of the businesses that exist here on an ongoing basis. we have 16 million visitors a year. that is in no small part due to the activities associated with the night life and this city. that is not lost on all of us. one of the things that i think it's important to the mayor and myself as i sit here today, and i know that you guys are going to be focusing on, i looked out and i see so many pieces of the city family here engaged in this conversation. i think it is really a measurable thing that you have the chief of police introducing today's conversation and today's forum with you in addition to having the board of supervisors as civil the understand the work that you and why it is so important. having individuals like -- one of the board members spoke earlier about having oewd focusing on this. all this matters when you're trying to work collaborative late. part of the problem in the past has been people working in individual silos and not sharing

the biggest gift that the tech community in san francisco today can ever give san francisco is passing prop e, which creates jobs in san francisco, and helps small business. it's the longest legacy gift we can give and that is why i'm working so hard on it. 100 years from now, san francisco will continue to be the innovation capital of the world, because we made these concessions. >> okay. i'm not too concerned about 100 years from now. that is awesome, but i'm concerned with five years from now. let's go it sf city for a second. i know a lot of companies have benefited from the payroll tax changes that have happened. not all of them seem to be giving back as much. let's focus on the positive. who is really, really helping to give back and giving you the time and money you need to make these things work? let's call them out for doing well. >> funny enough it's the same companies that are on the sign at the airport. >> all of them? >> most of them. >> so which ones aren't helping out so much? i mean they are taking the benefit -- i mean, it was a tough road to get to lowering their payr

muni service to young people in san francisco? in other words, if mtc isn't willing to do it on its own, should the city be paying more money into mtc to get the service out of mtc? >> as a last resort. that would be certainly the last way of funding it that i would look at. there is a continuity problem between the different transportation agencies that make it a little bit unworkable. at this present time i think one of the ways to deal with the issue is to see if the nuts and bolts of it can be tweaked a little bit to make it into a workable solution. maybe that may take a little bit more time, but i don't think as a sort of knee-jerk reaction we need to put the burden on taxpayers. with that being said it's vitally important for people to get around and especially those who can't afford and if you are a young person, i think that is a very important consideration as well. again, the focus should be on tweaking the nuts and bolts of continuity issue to find a work-around there before putting the burden on the taxpayer. >> the f

and that is extraordinarily important for san francisco. the fact that this is someplace that people want to live coming out of school, means that the employees are moving here. this is not something that is lost on traditional silicon valley. silicon valley has figured out that people want to live in san francisco, and the solution, the short-term solution is the buss that we all see, that now start in marin county and pick people up at the presidio and into the city as they go down to oracle and google and adobe, and apple. all of these companies are running these buses to bring people that they want to hire and they want to retain down to their corporate headquarters in silicon valley. it's a tremendous change and i would postulate if you think about this for a moment, it's essentially like the suburban flight of the 1960's turned on its head. when you think back about what was going on in cities in suburbia in the 1950's, '60's and 70's, people didn't want to live in the cities and people wanted to go out to the suburbs for good school

so this end the league of women voters of san francisco and the san francisco public press working with researchers at uc davis, developed an issue position survey for the supervisorial candidates. the candidates were asked to state whether they support or opposite 43 specific polices or policy proposals. many of which have recently divided the board of supervisors. as the candidates here tonight, london breed, julian davis, hope johnson, andrew resignato and thea selby answered. christina olague has not answered any of the questions. the survey responses were provided to team of uc hasteings ings students and representatives of league of women voters, who drew up the questions for tonight's debate. the results of the candidate survey are used by the san francisco public press to create a non-partisan voter guide that summarizes where the candidates stand on the issue and will be available on the website soon. meanwhile hvnnjp. preview you may pick up a copy of the current issue of the san francisco public press at the table in the back of the room, which has a fold out summarizing the

of san francisco.thank you. gentlemen of the audience, let me introduce myself. my name is emilt( lawrence. i have been a resident of this city and county for 40 years. what we have shown the people, in my opinion, is what a great frame up can be in the city of san francisco. where you have here is the wrong man on trial. you should have mattison here. for the record, i do not know of any trial court in america that except -- that accepts tampered evidence in court. you have evidence manufactured, according to ms. lopez, by ivory mattison, who claimed to be an attorney when, in fact, she was not. who claimed she was an expert in domestic violence, when in fact, she was not. who wanted to manufacture a video the way phil bront stina of the san francisco chronicle did in his custody battle with sharon stone. weibring that to your attention because i work with bill brownstein. i know what that meant that is. as the night caddie, helped introduce him to sharon's down when i was a columnist there for eight

we lived in san francisco here for over 35 years. and this area that we're talking about, we really have to look at the bigger picture. we're talking about the open public space, the renaissance of our waterfront. and we can't forget that. what this project does for the neighborhood is support the western side of the sidewalk. it opens up most importantly the accessible public view corridors, and it provides pedestrian connections to the waterfront. it's very easy to collect 30,000 signatures for people who say, well, do you want a chance to vote on this, do you want a big development when they sell people on signing these petitions, it's very easy to pay them for somebody to gather signatures, and have the opportunity to relook at this project. i'm not hearing that today. i'm hearing people say they voted on the project already. i just want to remind people that what the facts of this project is. it's the greater pedestrian and public good that this project does. it's the public playground that we're giving back. we're moving a surf

a vision for what san francisco is going to be. and i think that involves looking at a lot of different things. one thing that daniel mentioned and we have mentioned about public safety is that we're not using our police resources wisely or not using science to guide where to use our police resources. we need to look at our transportation system and revolutionize that. that will improve a lot of things, public health, public safety, commerce. so we need to be looking with a vision for the future about what we want our city to be. and i think i have done that before and like i said, i'm for prevention. and i'm for looking to the future and figuring out how we can sculpt a better san francisco and that is what i will do as supervisor. thank you, mr. davis. i want to remind folks and point out that we have seen a disturbing trend in san francisco over the past couple ever years. of years. we have had a lot of leadership appointed for us. an appointed mayor, appointed district attorney when our leaders are chosen for us instead of by u

he and san francisco will give us positive and strong support. i would like to say thanks to mayor lee. we also -- always believed san francisco is an important port and trade and cultural center in the western part of the united states. it has a long history of business and cultural exchange with china. as i come to san francisco this time, i have some new feelings. i have been to san francisco many times but no time like this time that makes me more convinced that both sides share a stronger desire for corp. and no time like this time that i sense -- for cooperation. there are nmany opportunities in front of us, especially in the field of infrastructure. as i said this time, i have a delegation of 100 people coming from 40 companies. many of them in fact specialize in infrastructure field. the closely followed -- they have been closely following the projects in city developments, in airports and seaports renovations, and real-estate, and high-speed railways. some have already had the experience in engineering design, construction, and managemen

i'm a renter in san francisco. i am not going to put a solar system on the roof of my landlord's property. for a small amount of money i can go out and change to get my electricity as a totally greenway of doing business. it makes a change in my life and the world. options but that.n't have the program would start with 95,000 people. the long-term goal is reach everyone. that is what state law says. at some point all residential customers have to have the opportunity to be in this program. as supervisor campos said, the long-term look at this is really simple. if you look at our water system the reason it works so well for everybody in san francisco is we own our assets. we can control our costs and figure out how we will maintain those assets. the problem in the power system is we don't own it accept for hetchy. we have to start slow, get a revenue base. once we get that, it is possible then to start doing a real control of assets of generating green power. what we can do is this will leverage our ability to creat

how crazy is that san francisco -- there is no city in america half the size of san francisco that does not offer world-class, multi-purpose arena and san francisco has never had it, with all due respect to the cal pals. [ laughter ] we are prepared to spend over $100 million to renovate that pier, those piers, which are now crumbling into the bay and whose primary purpose is to serve as a parking lot. this project is going to reclaim this part of the city as a wonderful public asset for all citizens to enjoy. that is a 13-acre site. so imagine as part of this project over four acres of new public space that will be incorporated into the design. and appropriate for transit for a city like san francisco, this location is tremendously located for all public transportation, whether coming from the bay bridge, the red line there is bart. the purple line is muni. you see caltrain, as well as the location of the future transbay terminal. we don't have the transportation plan yet. peter albert and the city are conducting a major study not only our project, but the transit-friendly atmosphere.
