the san francisco medical society represents over 2,000 physicians from san francisco and marin. medical society is the only association in the two counties that includes in his membership, positions from all modes of practice, specialties and hospitals. thank you for the opportunity to address the commission regarding the next san francisco department of public health, director of health. we will also be submitting comments in writing. san francisco, as we have heard, is a unique city with a diverse population. we believe the uniqueness should be taken into account when choosing the next director. such an individual should understand the diverse needs of the various racial and ethnic groups and communities that make up san francisco. we believe we have been extremely fortunate to have great leaders in this area from previous directors including barbara garcia and dr katz and dr sandra hernandez. there are a number of other qualifications that we would like to see in the new director. the obvious qualification would be someone who has proven leadership ability and insight into th

i'm a long -- i'm from san francisco, fifth generation san franciscan.and i used to many years ago work for the health department trying to stabilize the households for youth because they were either runaways or they had problems getting emancipated. i think that the reality is, youth services have been a miss in san francisco. you know, we need to keep the young people in our city. we need to have housing for them. we need to have all the different kinds of things we need when development comes in san francisco. the housing needs to be family-friendly. some of it is not. when you put the single unit housing in, it's not family friendly. a family can't survive in one room units. maybe that's all they can afford. this is just another part of the pie that needs to continue in san francisco. and i'm glad that see supervisor yee here because he has been an advocate for youth in the past. and i hope to see him continue to do that. and i i want to applaud him for all the work he's donement thank you. -- done. thank you. >> supervisor yee: before i turn it back

[applause] >> one day after his inauguration, we passed the american recovery and reinvestment act. for our region, that meant a billion dollars for the central subway. studio parkway over $300 million, the caltrain electrification, almost a billion dollars, over $400 million for this. c

i'm going to tell you a little about my experience once i was hired for the city and county of san francisco. first of all, i left a rewarding job in san joaquin county as a child care worker to come work for the city of san francisco where i wanted to work for since i was eight years old and give back to the forgotten communities, oppressed communities because i do know what it's like to be on the other side of receiving services when you come from a family of nine and you are living in public housing, you know what the experience is like. so, always my desire as a little girl to give back to this community. i experienced on the job racism, targeted, bullying from my supervisor and things of that nature and i'll leave you guys with this. i had an accident where i was rear ended in a county vehicle. i was rear ended, i was injured. i left for medical leave, i had two weeks 'til my probation was up. they fired me as one of my sisters said, they didn't release me from termination, from probation, they -- [microphone is silent] >> supervisor kim: thank you, miss branch. thank you. >> good after

when i was born in san francisco, the population has grown 4300 on average every year, boom or bust, and i'm partly responsible for that because i've got three kids under four. i'm part of creating more san franciscans, so when i think about this issue about density, i think about neighborhood character, but i also think about the decision to build the home that i'm raising my family in 80 years ago. i'm thinking about it in terms of where are my children going to life? how is san francisco going to grow in a way that is inclusionary, protect the people that are already here, and become a city that we can love and live in? >> thank you very much. mr. murphy? >> i wish to provide an an he c can -- anec decide dodote to t crisis kool-aid. this is gentrification at its base. when you take people who have spent their lives, generations, perhaps, in a particular area, making that area livable for them, and replace them with people who make more money, of course it fills the city's coffers, but it does nothing except destroy communities. what i would propose is in terms of density is buildi

not only for san francisco but for the region.f course, it is the location in mclaren park which is the city's second biggest park after golden gate. many people don't know the neighborhood in the first place if they haven't been there. we call it the best neighborhood nobody has ever heard our. every neighborhood in district nine has a very special aspect. where we are right now is the mission district. the mission district is a very special part of our city. you smell the tacos at the [speaking spanish] and they have the best latin pastries. they have these shortbread cookies with caramel in the middle. and then you walk further down and you have sunrise cafÉ. it is a place that you come for the incredible food, but also to learn about what is happening in the neighborhood and how you can help and support your community. >> twenty-fourth street is the birthplace of the movement. we have over 620 murals. it is the largest outdoor public gallery in the country and possibly the world. >> you can find so much political engagement pa

i work for city and county of san francisco for 16 years. i am here today to let you know what my experience has been as a black city employee. while at work a horrible accident happened, and i believe because of my race i was forced to early retirement, or be fired. i was accused of hitting a person who was in a wheelchair, she went to, she was in a wheelchair. and after i hit her, she went to the hospital and two days after her hospital admission she died. oh. the circumstances around my case is simple. i was going 15 miles an hour while making a left hand turn. she appeared on my right side, of my left hand side, by a stationary bus. the wheelchair was rolling toward me, we couldn't, she couldn't stop. she ended up on the hood of my car, and then hit the ground. there was an investigation, consisted in -- [microphone is silent] >> supervisor kim: thank you, mr. hanon. >> hello, my name is madeline mcmilan, i work for the san francisco police department. i've been working there for 25 years. i was in an accident and was off work. prior to

it was -- remember when san francisco was wild? yeah. okay. and the first place i went to in san francisco was district 8. we didn't call it district 8, we called it the castro, and i wanted to go there. i saw it on the map, and i didn't know. all i knew about it was castro, that must be where the cubans are. true story. and i went to a place on castro street to get some cuban food. it was called the castro cafe, and just as i arrived, they were throwing a bearded gentleman out of there who was wearing a beautiful red dress. they were throwing him right out on the sidewalk, and i'd never seen a man in a dress before, and i thought, wow, that's unusual, and now it's my preference. i'm going to keep my remarks short, but i do think it's kind of weird that i'm here with this group of people that protect san francisco and protect this community in this very special, spiritual place to me, and my building, my rent-control building, is on the market. and it's been on the market for a few months, and so i'm here today, and at the same time there's a

i'd like the san francisco airport commission along with the leadership at the san francisco airport, along with the chair of the san francisco round table, and we've worked diligently with congress woman jackie speier. this is something that's near and dear to her office. we've worked with senator pelosi's office, we've reached out to senator feinstein. it's very easy to think about adjusting flight patterns and spending a tiny bit more money and going up and over san francisco rather than right area. other areas of the bay are impacted by landings, as well. oakland airport has been diverting flights over our city, and so people's -- people's sanity is at stake, as well as their essential quality of life. so i want to have that hearing. i'm calling for that hearing to be done at the land use and transportation committee. i'd like it to be a joint hearing with the san francisco airport commission. i'd like them to be invited to participate in this. i'd like it to be open to all the different districts, and i know that supervisor cohen had expressed concern about this. she's heard from

i moved to san francisco in 1973. he helped to establish the russian hill neighbors in the early 1980's. he was an incredible leader in our community. he was survived by his three daughters, claire, rosemary, and kathrin, and his grandson, theo. his contributions will live on. i'd also like to close today's meeting in memory of michael robert painter. michael painter passed away this summer after a long life and distinguished career in landscape architecture. he was the creator of the presidio placement concept. he had his own firm since 1969, and in the course of his career, completed over 850 projects, winning over 60 awards. he was a distinguished alumnus of the college of environmental design at u.c. berkeley and a fellow of the american society of landscape architects. he's credited on multiple awards for his work on the presidio parkway, including from spur and the project of the year award from the california transportation foundation. michael is survived by his wife, sue, of 59 years, his son, josh, his daught
