this was mentioned san francisco has a long history called the san francisco model for how we respond to public health crisis. that is how we responded a generation ago to the aids crisis. i think we saw that again how our city responded to covid-192 and a half years ago and seeing it again today so i want to say how grateful i am to the leadership of our city and public health officialess and senator wiener and president walton and (inaudible) i like to hand it off to tyler, the ceo of the san francisco aids foundation. >> public health crisis. a community filled with fear, unanswered questions and valid outrage. resilient people that had to rise up in support of one another to educate each ort and fight for access for resources they need and deserve. a moment in history where a federal public health response fails a community causing them unnecessary emotional mental and physical harm. no, i'm not talking about chronically hiv policy from the earliest day when the federal government resisted addressing the onset of aids in our country. i reference this very moment in the nation hist

san francisco is going through, i think, a park renaissance. we opened the francisco park, which is just magnificent property that sits on top of an old reservoir dating back to the gold rush and has tremendous views of the golden gate bridge and bay and a place where you can bring kids. a cool play ground to bring dogs an amazing dog park. a meadow to watch the fireworks. fog willing. fleet week, community gardens, it is just such an incredible unique space. we are proud of it. >> and then right down the road in a few years, we will be pleased to welcome everybody to india basin in the bay view in the southeast part along the southern water front. 1.7 miles of waterfront that until recently has been under utilized and under fulfill in the a community this needs it the most. india basin is really a feel moment for the bay view and southeastern part of san francisco. it is going to be san francisco's next great and one of the most important parks >> that's fantastic. now, we have a great history of having conference in parks. can you touch on the

. >> these are the things that the san francisco public utilities commission is doing. they are doing it because they feel they have a responsibility to san franciscans and to people in this community. >> i had a grandmother who lived in bayview. she never moved, never wavered. it was a house of security answer entity where we went for holidays. i was a part of bayview most of my life. i can't remember not being a part of bayview. >> i have been here for several years. this space used to be unoccupied. it was used as a dump. to repurpose it for something like this with the bistro to give an opportunity for the local vendors and food people to come out and showcase their work. that is a great way to give back to the community. >> this is a great example of a public-private community partnership. they have been supporting this including the san francisco public utilities commission and mayor's office of workforce department. >> working with the joint venture partners we got resources for the space, that the businesses were able to thrive because of all of the opportunities

this is the beginning of san francisco absolutely coming back, and the downtown core here in san francisco is feeling it this week. >> rodney, are you concerned with our image problem when i'm talking about car break-ins, crime, homelessness because it's not just our secret in the bay area. a lot of people know about it cross-country. >> yeah. you know, i think the problems exist much on the west coast, and we're all dealing with that. i'll say the city of san francisco and the police chief and the mayor are doing a great job to try to fix the city as best they can. but we're all being villages about it. we're all helping each other, and san francisco residents, if someone's lost and needs directions, let's help them out because tourism employs so many of our san francisco families and youth, and we need to make sure that that's going strong here for years to come. >> like we said, tourism is the number one industry in san francisco, not tech or anything else. rodney, if you had a magic wand, are there two or three big things it's going to take to get tourism back to pre-pandemic levels? a

[♪♪♪] >>> i'm currently an h2 firefighter for the san francisco fire department. i served active duty in the navy. i wanted something that was going to be in the medical field, but not necessarily stay in a hospital setting and i didn't want to stay in an office and this job kind of combines everything i was looking for. everyday's different. there's always something new and to learn. and my first introduction to the department was being surrounded by people of the lgbtq community. and so we were able to get, you know, it just made things a little more comfortable that you could talk to people about things that people necessarily wouldn't understand. i've had to hide myself. able to come out. being able to

and here in san francisco san francisco and for the state of california. next, we have lauren. she's the sustainable officer for the city of los angeles where she's driving the implementation of la's green new deal which is a policy for local action to confront the climate crisis and build an inclue sifsh green economy that prioritizes equity. and lauren works on environmental issues from the defense fund which is the major ngo and working as a senior policy advisor at the british embassy and secretary for climate change programs at the california environment protection agency. next we have sharon. she's the 332nd mayor [laughter] . we thought we were getting up there with 45 in san francisco. 332nd. not getting up in there age but numbers. [laughter] so, prior to this, she has held a number of important government roles including as member parliament and state secretary for education, cultural and science, states secretary for economic affairs and state secretary of infrastructure and the environment. she served as deputy mayor for traffic and transport, water and air quality

and in san francisco, we have. and so that is because of your leadership and that is why i want to share, i promise to make it brief, a few of the lessons i have learn here for the past two years. to commissioners, staff and adult allies are here to support but do not be afraid to push for your belief. in this nation, we've seen the black lives movement. we've seen the moment for social justice and climate justice and gun control, all led by youth and this is not because of some crazy conspiracy or crazy thing that youth have ideas, it's because you all deserve to be here. and you do have these ideas and i urge you to push for them. the second thing is ask questions. you are appointed for a reason and you deserve to be here, yes. but you are not here only because of what you know but also because of the potential for you to grow and learn and finally, take advantage of every single opportunity. i remember when i was in the vote 16 campaign, i was quite literately thrown into cameras and action and walk and protests

you are watching san francisco rising. thanks for watching. >> i don't want to be involved in the process after it happens. i want to be there at the front end to help people with something in my mind from a very early age. our community is the important way to look at things, even now. george floyd was huge. it opened up wounds and a discussion on something festering for a long time. before rodney king. you can look at all the instances where there are calls for change. i think we are involved in change right now in this moment that is going to be long lasting. it is very challenging. i was the victim of a crime when i was in middle school. some kids at recess came around at pe class and came to the locker room and tried to steal my watch and physically assaulted me. the officer that helped afterwards went out of his way to check the time to see how i was. that is the kind of work, the kind of perspective i like to have in our sheriff's office regardless of circumstance. that influenced me a lot. some of the storefronts h

we are from mexico, but after 27 years, we feel part of the community of san francisco.ry important for us to be the change, the positive change that is happening in san francisco. the presidio in particular, they're doing great efforts to bring back san francisco, what it was. a lot of tourism and a lot of new restaurants and the new companies. san francisco is international and has a lot of potential. (♪♪) so you want to try authentic mexican food and i invite you to come to our bistro located on 50 moroo avenue in presidio. and i'll wait here with my open arms and giving you a welcome to try my food. i grew up in san francisco kind of all over the city. we had pretty much the run of the city 'cause we lived pretty close to polk street, and so we would -- in the summer, we'd all all the way down to aquatic park, and we'd walk down to the library, to the kids' center. in those days, the city was safe and nobody worried about us running around. i went to high school in spring valley. it was over the hill from chinatown. it was kind of fun to experience being in a minority, which most white people don't get to experience that often. everything was just really within walking distance, so it make it really fun. when i was a teenager, we didn't have a lot of money. we could go to sam wong's and get super -- soup for $1. my parents came here and were drawn to the beatnik culture. they wanted to meet all of the writers who were so famous at the time, but my mother had some serious mental illness issues, and i don't think my father were really aware of that, and those didn't really become evident until i was about five, i guess, and my marriag

our office is suing on behalf of the city of san francisco the ceo of our city the 45th mayor of san mayor london breed. >> thank you, david. i want to start by acknowledging and everyone thattinging our city attorney for his work and efforts and finding a possible solution to deal with this really challenging and complex problem. fact is, we should not have to be here. we should not have to be here to protect patients. and what is interesting is the arguments that have been used to protect patients have been the arguments to protect patients from the federal government. and in fact this is a long very frustrating process that started left year. when the leader of the laguna honda self reported challenges with those who over dozed who did in the die and the need to develop systems to support this hospital to ensure patients safety. cms did not come to us we went to them because laguna honda we understand have complex challenges, but important low, we have systems and regulations we know we must follow. so we went to them. and there was a discovery that there were things we needed to c

i grew up in san francisco. my family did in the they came to the country as refugees from a long war. my father at the time was a medical student studying in greece and protested against the ethiopian government revoked his citizenship and lost everything. he and my mother came to san francisco to build a new life. when they came they believed in the american dream. through work and education you can do anything. my dad instead of being able to continue his work in medical school no credits transferred worked 30 years as a taxi driver and they sent us to catholic school. my family was religious and thought it was the best way for us to move forward. i did not agree with everything but i believed being a person for other, being of service and being the change you want to see in the world. i got my msw from berkeley and working to get folks off the street and into recovery and helping those who were incarcerated rebuild their lives. that's why i have done the work over 20 years it help make san francisco a better

it was brought to mia tension late last time, that's rocket time in san francisco. but every delay, means a denial to safe affordable housing. i want to thank you for helping us make this building part of this reality and maintain this partnership and great opportunity for san franciscoians to have a safe affordable place to call home. and with that, i want to introduce the supervisor who represents this district. it threw me off, i used to be supervisor of district 5 and after redistricting, supervisor stefani is the supervisor of this district which i think is great because she will give this building, this side of the community a lot of love and attention. but more importantly our city is changing. it's changing and we have to make some hard decisions redistricting. and in fact, we saw district 6 grow significantly. we saw district 10 grow. but we didn't see a lot of our other parts of our city grow because we were not building enough housing. we have to get aggressive in building housing all over our city. that's really important. but in the meantime this is a lu

♪♪ >> san francisco!his is an exhibition across departments highlighting different artworks from our collection. gender is an important part of the dialogue. in many ways, this exhibition is contemporary. all of this artwork is from the 9th century and spans all the way to the 21st century. the exhibition is organized into seven different groupings or themes such as activities, symbolism, transformation and others. it's not by culture or time period, but different affinities between the artwork. activities, for example, looks at the role of gender and how certain activities are placed as feminine or masculine. we have a print by uharo that looks at different activities that derisionly performed by men. it's looking at the theme of music. we have three women playing traditional japanese instruments that would otherwise be played by men at that time. we have pairings so that is looking within the context of gender in relationships. also with how people are questioning the whole idea of pairing in the first

san francisco. it had been i'm looking at the soon to be considered enemy neil to planning mr. braub. it had been a planning department guideline in the 1990's. and early i think in 2001 supervisor leno turned it it section 415 of the planning code this med a requirement to have 10% of the units in buildings over 10 units in size. the boardable at certain rates. that changed over time as markets changed. and hen unfortunately in 2012, the board of supervisors and the then mayor edlee decided to include it as a static number in the charter. and it could not be increased when the market was such that it ratings should go high and could not be decreased when the market conscience were such that it should have gone lower. and as a result of that, in 20 late 2015, supervisor kim and i scolded in introducing a charter amendment to take it out of the charter, put it become in law. and that provision allowed for the board of supervisors to regulate by ordinance. and part of that work out was the creation of

these are by far my absolute favorite days in san francisco. i have a feeling that mayor breed feels the same way as does director mcfadden. [speaking spanish]. >> because -- looking at beautiful homes sometimes for the first time especially for youth since they have been homeless. to call their own, well is nothing like it. there is nothing more inspiring, more hopeful, more heart warming than seeing people in their own space and their own homes. [speaking spanish]. i want to say that sometimes it is very frustrating to read about san francisco in the papers. [speaking spanish]. because those of us who do this work mayor breed, mcfadden, myself. the community service, larkin street. you know -- lauda. we know that we are changing lives every single day we are saving lives every day. and the press talks about that. they'd talk about you know trashing the streets or homeless encampments but not talking about the lives that are being transformed and the beauty that happens inside buildings like this every day in san francisco. and i think we node

san francisco is not a failed city. san francisco is a city that leads with its heart and yes, that is messy, but it is also our greatest strength. it is why you worked 12, 14, 16 hours a day, nights, weekdays, no rest, months on end, to keep people you didn't know safe. to safe people from dying, make sure people were fed and housed. it is why you worked across departments and sectors and roles and any other line that we could think of and we know there is a lot in government. worked across all of those to give the people what they needed, and it is also why when you asked the people of san francisco responded in solidarity and with solidarity because this is a city that leads with its heart. and at a time when nationally things are still unraveling, this is the leadership that we need more then ever. the pandemic is not quite the crisis it was 2 and a half years ago, but the need to redesign, rebuild, reconnect, that remains, so we need the example that you provided in responding to covid. we need to believe that we c

and san francisco leadership and government as a beacon for the entire country. we are so up front about what we believe in, we're really up front about inclusivity and i know that, others look at us, many look to us. we've had other departments, contact us in terms of how do you, how do you do this? how do you create a diverse equitable and inclusive workforce? and so, but i would be lying if i said that we don't have any problems in california or in san francisco or in the department. we are out liars, sure? are we doing our best again to address those things with implicit bias training? with changing the culture, our department has made huge huge leaps as has the city and i really feel like san francisco is part of the solution to moving forward in a better way. people are individuals, there are a lot of different types of people in this world and celebrating our differences is what pride is all about. >> so the march started in 2004, there was a lot of action going on at the time against transgender people. so an email thread went around and everybody decided

thousand applications for citizenship our cause the real low income to moderate income resident in san francisco and the bayview sometimes the workshops are said attend by poem if san mateo and from sacking. >> we think over restraining order thousand legal permanent residents in san francisco that are eligible for citizenship but totally lack information and they don't have trained professionals culturally appropriate with an audience you're working with one time of providing services with pro bono lawyers and trained professionals to find out whether your eligible the first station and go through a purview list of questions to see if they have met the 56 year residents arrangement or they're a u.s. citizenship they once they get through the screening they go to legal communication to see lawyers to check am i eligible to be a citizen we send them to station 3 that's when they sit down with experienced advertising to fill out the 4 hundred naturalization form and then to final review and at the end he helps them with the check out station and send them a packet to fill and wait a month to 6 wee
