these are the live looks at san francisco, san jose, san rafael, and walnut creek. now, the first arm of the storm system is now reaching the bay area. after several weeks in the southern california, sparking worry there. many say this rain is a welcomeight, but a new atmospheric river also means preparing for the problems that come with all that water. nbc bay area's alyssa goard spoke with agencies tracking the storm in the east bay. garvin and jessica, there is still quite a bit of sand left here at this zone seven site in livermore, and there are many other sites, three of them actually set up around the city. as crews have been preparing for this storm today. after a very dry january, the rain is returning to the bay area and not a minute too soon. to this point we were seeing the third driest january on record for here in the east bay. and so we are so excited and so optimistic to see these rainstorms today. east bay mud hopes these storms will top off reservoirs and help fill its system, which provides water for 1.4 million people. but they're also keeping an

this is our view, i think of san francisco you wouldn't even know though because you can't see with theerage of rainfall and fog. san jose, .7 of an inch. but again something is better than nothing. we're going to continue to see these conditions as the atmospheric river persists. south bay communities and here in san francisco we will be at that level too. so relatively weak atmospheric river is under way it's going to continue to nudge that sort of moisture from the united states. i'm going to pull up the map below me -- we're beginning to see the nose of that atmospheric river. that fire hose engine beginning to set up across the west coast. as it does so, it's definitely going to be bringing us a lot more moisture over the next several hours again we'll be seeing that heaviest nose of moisture north of our north bay communities. but we'll still be getting in on some of it throughout this afternoon. however the heaviest of it again isn't really going to be arriving until later in the day on monday. so we have a couple of days before that heaviest rain gets here. but again, right now
