[laughter] >> but i do -- i am inspired by our immigrant community. we've done so much that i think the city is -- its dna is really about our diversity. let me thank adrian. she's been a wonderful leader at the office of civic engagement and immigrant affairs, leading an effort not just with the immigrant rights commission, but a good strong relationship with our community-based organizations that do all of the great on the groundwork with our immigrant families, people who are coming here as refugees, adjusting, people who come here, permanent residents, people who have come here seeking their future, their hopes for themselves and their families. also people who often came here by different ways and stayed, and maybe overstayed their status, or are escaping from war-torn or imp

we're lucky as a city we've got people he heading the departments you have the staff and the public and different commentary partners. in is an event in many relevance is about what san francisco is about as a city. we're the city of st. francis and the tradition of st. francis we take care of our own. there's a lot of great prosperity but there are people who are struggling. we as a city are only as strung as the person who has the least. and by that measure this is an important event. and you the people what take time to be here and help other people. and not only the other services but connect with them on a human level. those phone calls are not used to be treated with respect and the fact you're doing that can be life changing p i'm proud to be part of this event. i want to thank you you're making san francisco the city of hope for so many people. so thank you >> thank you supervisor campos. you know, i've been taught your blessed whether argue blessing. today, we're blessed when we see people giving up their day so thank you to you guys. let's give ourselves a round of applause for coming out today. i have have list of people i want to thank but one of the first, we have

has evolved over time, how it started as the main economic engine for the city and actually drove a lot of what happened in terms of the development of san francisco as a city, and how it affected the planning and the land use of the development of the city in its early days, and how in the last 40 years or so we see the swing in the changing of the face of the city, the changes in technology that have affected maritime industry and the traditional uses that created the port that gave rise to planning and new development and policy objectives that were born of the city to start looking at the waterfront differently as a place for people, so the staff report -- i'm not going to go into great detail. i think you can read it, but it's basically how the city up land has changed and how its relationship with the waterfront has changed and with the take down of the embarcadero freeway and the creation of the whole embarcadero transportation projects and the promenade and the light rail system we had a new palet on our hands that gave rise to the development water use plan and the commissioner was here to watch and witness in its early days and the commu

and immigrant rights organizations that have been part of the fabric of why i'm so proud of san francisco as a city that welcomes and protects our immigrant communities. and i also want to take a moment and thank all of you. you're taking pictures of us because i think behind us represents the diversity of our city. but we are looking at you. if you actually looked among yourselves, this room effects the diversity of the world. san francisco, we were built by immigrants. the presence of our city is successful because of the vitality of our immigrant community. and we know the future of san francisco rests with the future of our immigration and i am grab community. so, i want to thank you for being part of this. ~ immigrant as adrian mentioned in the late 1990s, the first time i set foot in city hall was when i was working as an immigrant rights attorney. working on the fact as you know our immigrants, our noncitizens have incredible challenges in becoming citizens. not only do they have to wade through immigration codes that are many inches thick. they orphan have to spend a ton of money to pay att

failure to figure out how to solve this, and it's a big problem to solve, will have real impact san francisco as a city and the people that live and visit here. in terms of the quality of life the ability to get around the city will degrade. transit service will decline. getting around on bicycle will decline and we will have more cars and bringing with that congestion and safety concerns and if all of that happens some of the shift we have recently seen of the regional economy back to san francisco would start to go the other way. the transportation system can be a big part of our competitive advantage both attracting people to live and work and thank you for the opportunity to have this hearing and i am happy to answer any questions. >> thank you. president chiu. >> thank you and i realized i should have thanked the chair for this hearing on this top and i can mr. reiskin and with the transportation and quality system. as you noted the mayor and i called for a blue ribbon committee and experts around the city and including yourself and supervisor wiener to put our heads together to figure out how to

san francisco. the passage of the housing trust fund was and is a huge win for all of san francisco and our residents as one step in the right direction towards continuing to solve our city's ongoing housing needs. we are here today to announce the launch of a renewed down payment assistance program for our first responders here in san francisco. statistics will say that the majority of all of our first responders live outside of our city limits, and i for one believe that our communities and our neighborhoods are strengthened here in san francisco by the men and women who put their lives on the line every single day for us as san francisco residents. those that are standing behind me here today, living here within our various neighborhoods of san francisco, we're not only safer on a day-to-day basis in our neighborhoods when our first responders live in our streets, but also when the next big one hits here in san francisco we need to be ready to be responding and be a resilient city as we strive to do here in san francisco. when proposition c was being crafted, i introduced an amendment to help our first responders remain here in san francisco, to provide them an opportun

san francisco are many. not only will it further open up our parks and our city to innovation, to education, and includetionthv i. for all san francisco residents, but it's also as i mentioned before a significant step towards bridging our digital divide in our city. it provides local groups and community residents access to the internet they might not have had before, as well for our rec and park department as phil knows all too well many rec centers still use dial up service. when we think about registering our children for camps and play grounds, what we need to do in our daily lives, but also our government on a daily basis to use technology, this will be an incredible boone to our rec and park department and something we should all be very excited about. in terms of the details of the gift, google is providing a $600,000 financial gift to our city with no strings attached. i think a lot of the prior debate around free wi-fi in san francisco that never moved forward was because of different questions about business models or so forth, to emphasize this is a free gift of financial benefit to the city of san francisco with no strings attached. the money will come through sf city w

as everybody said, i really big battle. it's a battle for our values. i think it could potentially be the conversation for san francisco right now, not just about city college, but also about who we are as a city, what our values are and what we believe in. i think any city that gets called the snobbiest city in the country, which we he just were by travel and leisure, a city that get tarred by the same brush that silicon valley is. with google, all the things going on, we really need to talk about not just what city college offers, but what it means as an institution of diversity, of accessibility, of welcome in a city at a time when the counter narrative is that we're closing down, we're not accessible, and we're not interested in anybody who is not rich. so, please, please, i hope that we can all work together and take this very seriously. thank you. >> thank you.
