you know, this evening is really the mayor's reception, the san francisco bay area mayor's reception. did you know that there are three women members of fwn and honorees of the 100 most influential filipino women are mayors in the san francisco bay area? yay. i want to call up here -- come on up here, mayor of hercules, california. she was in the summit in 2006. do you want to tell the story ? >> congratulations to the 100 most influential filipino women. i attended first in 2006. and i was a planning commissioner then and i wanted to quit politics. i hated politics. but the summit inspired me. and merilee kept saying we needed more women in visible and a mainstream positions in government, commissions, and councils. so i was recognized in 2009, a couple of years ago. i was inspired by mayor joanne el rosario and the other women mayors around. so last year, i decided to run. and i won in november, not even a year. and little did i know, i was running into a burning building. hercules was crumbling. in january, the mayor resigned, so i became vice mayor.

it's of massive importance to the people what comes in and out of san francisco bay. they can't see it where they are. they get the idea to build a giant wooden structure. the years that it was up here, it gave the name telegraph hill. it survived although the structure is long gone. come to the 1870's and the city has growed up remarkably. it's fueled with money from the nevada silver mines and the gold rush. it's trying to be the paris of the west. now the beach is the suburbs, the we will their people lived on the bottom and the poorest people lived on the top because it was very hard getting to the top of telegraph hill. it was mostly lean-to sharks and bits of pieces of houses up here in the beginning. and a group of 20 businessmen decided that it would be better if the top of the hill remained for the public. so they put their money down and they bought four lots at the top of the hill and they gave them to the city. lily hitchcock coit died without leaving a specific use for her bequest. she left a third of her estate for the beautify indication of the city. ar

the last barriers preventing more petroleum from seeping into san francisco bay. >> the agencies are saying a very small fraction made its way into the bay. >> the fuel spill was noticed 7:00 p.m. saturday night by a uc campus police officer who came across a foul smell along strawberry creek. upstream in the basement of stanley hall, is the source of this spill. >> well know that we had some 1700 gallons of diesel fuel spill within the building, and a smaller amount, some fraction of that, was released to the creek, strawberry creek. >> crews quickly started siphoning the fuel from the basement with large pumping trucks. this emergency is all because of some sort of malfunction with a tank feeding fuel to the emergency generator in the basement. the diesel made it out of stanley hall because the building has a series of pumps that remove natural water that collects in the basement. 100 students were immediately evacuated from the building. a few who were disappointed that stanley hall remain enclosed. at the marina, barriers and booms prompted concerns about the environment. she come

coast guard in a boat that stopped running, is the individual kind of activities that go on in san francisco bay those of us that had been on boats in the bay, with the coast guard has done a magnificent job. and just on a daily basis, not even talking about earthquakes or other types of activities, and helping the citizens of the bay area and also the other areas where the coast guard exists. >> thank you. in san francisco bay on any given week, we saved six lives. we do not do that by ourselves. we do that with our county fire department and the police departments that are by our side on the water. we worked very well together using all of our limited resources to actually execute that mission on a daily basis. i can say we are well-practiced on a regular basis, and that will certainly serve us well in a disaster. >> i would also like to add that -- and i know that the coast guard is going to be there right off the bat on the first responding to save lives, and that is valuable. i think the strength of the coast guard and all the other military organizations is their ability to do logistics. t
