>> here is san francisco's bay bridge. ey absorb the areas of the earthquake while leaving the rest of the infrastructure intact. really, really cool. let's check it out. rising from the san francisco bay is the newest architectural jewel of northern california. the new bay bridge, which connects san francisco and oakland, is now open for business. and what a sight it is to see! roughly 280,000 vehicles travel the east and westbound lanes each day. it's now the widest bridge in direction. this is six years worth of round the clock time lapse video of the new 2.2 mile east span. the project cost $6.4 billion. this is earthquake country. the great san francisco quake of 1906 wiped out 80% of the city. the old bay bridge opened in 1936. and it sits in the worst possible spot: right between two major fault lines. the san andreas and the hayward faults. and the worst-case scenario happened october 17th, 1989. you may remember this scene from the loma prieta quake. a 220 ton section of the old bridge collapsed. traffic came to a

the so-called tech buses that shuttle workers to and from the south bay in san francisco, from apple to google, all of these companies have been using muni bus stops for free, for years, which is about to change. nbc bay area's stephanie chuang is live at city hall. stephanie, what's the reaction so far to asking these companies to pony up some cash? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, kris. i would say mostly opposition so far. there are about 50 to 60 people packed into the room here on the fourth floor of city hall. and it will be a pretty long meeting. people are able to go up to comment on each of the 80 or so muni bus stops and voice their opinions. so it could take a little while. we've has residents talking about how it will be noisy, we've had business owners say it's going to take away business, because some of the shuttle zones will take away parking spots. this 18-month pilot program would charge tech companies $1 per stop per day, a move that would total $1.6 million, money that would go back to fund the program. the reaction to this move, mostly divided. every 20 to
