swimming across san francisco bay is not an easy feat, able bodied or not. robert heitz doesn't scare early from challenges. at 7:30 he'll swim from alcatraz island across san francisco bay, and he says today is a culmination of a journey that started 19 years ago. robert heitz was 22-year-old when he was on board a boat in 2003 in lake michigan. unfamiliar with the area, he dove head first into a sandbar and was rendered a quadriplegic. these are x-rays of his injuries. three years after his accident and a lot of physical therapy late, he was able to regain function of all four of his limbs. he was back at school studying biomedical engineering. he was driving and he was fully functional. fast forward to today, heitz takes on a new feat, in a couple of hours he'll swim from alcatraz island all across the san francisco bay. he says he's always been a strong swimmer and today he's claiming his place in the water where his injury happened. he's doing to to raise awareness for the paralysis recovery foundation, an organization he founded after his injury. heitz

san francisco in the low 70s. notice how san francisco, half moon bay, they don't change. but the valley temperatures will continue to go up by the end of the week as we get more high pressure. we're seeing not a strong ocean breeze, but our coastal areas will stay nice and mild. for southern california, the heat is hitting today. the excessive heat warning going up for all of these areas from monterey southward. for the bay area, it becomes an excessive heat warning on saturday through tuesday. that's when we could see highs well over 100 degrees. possibly up to 110. for livermore, this will be the hottest stretch of weather since august of 2020. we had seven days in a row of temperatures over 100 degrees. coming up over the next few days, we'll have about four days of temperatures over 100 degrees. we are going to have a stretch of very hot weather, while our coastal areas are looking like 70s and maybe 80 degrees for santa cruz on sunday. we'll see a big difference from the interior valleys to coastal areas. mike, you've been watching big news in the east bay. >> same a
