swimming across san francisco bay is not an easy feat, able bodied or not. robert heitz doesn't scare early from challenges. at 7:30 he'll swim from alcatraz island across san francisco bay, and he says today is a culmination of a journey that started 19 years ago. robert heitz was 22-year-old when he was on board a boat in 2003 in lake michigan. unfamiliar with the area, he dove head first into a sandbar and was rendered a quadriplegic. these are x-rays of his injuries. three years after his accident and a lot of physical therapy late, he was able to regain function of all four of his limbs. he was back at school studying biomedical engineering. he was driving and he was fully functional. fast forward to today, heitz takes on a new feat, in a couple of hours he'll swim from alcatraz island all across the san francisco bay. he says he's always been a strong swimmer and today he's claiming his place in the water where his injury happened. he's doing to to raise awareness for the paralysis recovery foundation, an organization he founded after his injury. heitz

san francisco in the low 70s. notice how san francisco, half moon bay, they don't change. but the valley temperatures will continue to go up by the end of the week as we get more high pressure. we're seeing not a strong ocean breeze, but our coastal areas will stay nice and mild. for southern california, the heat is hitting today. the excessive heat warning going up for all of these areas from monterey southward. for the bay area, it becomes an excessive heat warning on saturday through tuesday. that's when we could see highs well over 100 degrees. possibly up to 110. for livermore, this will be the hottest stretch of weather since august of 2020. we had seven days in a row of temperatures over 100 degrees. coming up over the next few days, we'll have about four days of temperatures over 100 degrees. we are going to have a stretch of very hot weather, while our coastal areas are looking like 70s and maybe 80 degrees for santa cruz on sunday. we'll see a big difference from the interior valleys to coastal areas. mike, you've been watching big news in the east bay. >> same a

bay area. these are photos of dead sturgeon at oyster point in san mateo county, san francisco bay keeper says it has reports of dead fish in the middle of the bay between the dumbarton and san mateo bridges and shorelines, including foster city, hayward, sausalito and beyond. so scientists from the san francisco bay keeper began investigating the conclusion was that this was an outbreak of an organism called hetero sigma akashi. well uh, more commonly known as a red tide of harmful algae or to kind of red tide, harmful algae, 30 or 40. scientists say they won't know conclusively until further testing. and it's not killing all species. some like these bat rays are showing up in greater numbers at lake merritt. historically maybe one or two would be reported a day. excuse me a month, but nothing like this doctor, rosenfield said. not all wildlife will be impacted the same. i mean, this is like a forest fire in the water from officials perspective and you know, from all of us know now from watching wildfires in california, you know they can burn one neighborhood and leave one house. untouched exp

it's killing thousands of fish in the san francisco and san pablo bay s. as along lake merritt. what's being done? that story is just ahead. >>> we want to get caught up on the other headlines that we're watching this hour. an off-duty san jose cop was shot at. thankfully, the officer was not hurt. our damian trujillo tweeting this photo of the bullet hole on the door. the officer told the chp he didn't see a gun but heard a pop. then pulled over and saw this bullet hole. this front passenger door of his personal vehicle. he says the suspect was in a white hatchback with no license plates. this happened on northbound 101 in san jose near 85. just before 2:00 p.m. officers then shut down 101 northbound near that 85 interchange. you can see officers literally searching for clues and for bullet casings. you can imagine traffic was a mess much of the afternoon. 101 reopened just before 5:00 p.m. so just about a couple of hours ago. >>> also tonight, an east bay man accused of planting hidden cameras inside the bathroom of a starbucks. today that man made his first court appearance.
