the smoke wants to exit and the exit route from the camp fire is through the san francisco bay area because remember there's a lid of high pressure over top of us. so it can't go up. that would be great if it went up, but it can't, so it's finding some horizontal way to exit. there are three exit routes through the bay area and all three of them right now are blocked. it goes through san francisco bay down to the santa clara valley, topography, mountains on each side. it's like the bottom of a bowl trapped by the mountains. if it goes through the delta and down the 680 corridor, there's livermore for you. it gets tranned in the tri- valley because of our -- trapped in the tri-valley because of topography. the easiest place to go out would be the same place where the fog goes in, the golden gate. right offshore the winds are going the opposite direction. we have an onshore flow which is blocking the flow of smoke out there. so what we have is smoke simply trapped over the bay area with no means of escape. all those blue diamonds are very unhealthy air quality readings from napa south to frem

nbc bay area's sergio quintana is live in san francisco with how bay area activists are responding. sergio. >> reporter: as mexican and united states officials are pushing and pushing back over what to do with migrants at the border, there are immigration rights advocates from here in the bay area and across california that are heading to tijuana for what's being described as a humanitarian crisis. nbc news has confirmed with two trump administration officials that a deal has been reached with mexico's incoming president to keep asylum seekers in mexico during processing. a drastic change from current policy. in a tweet mr. trump reiterated his stance, saying migrants at the southern border will not be allowed into the united states. but tonight mexico's incoming interior minister denies any such deal. meanwhile, a group of southern california doctors headed to tijuana to help the migrants. >> we've been watching the suffering and pain in the news, and just sitting here feeling sorry for them isn't enough. we have to doing? . >> they loaded up medical supplies to drive to thousands

view of the smoky haze over the skyline of san francisco right now as seen from the exploratorium camera. of course, it looks like this all over the bay area right now. 59 degrees right now here in san francisco and in san jose. we have mid 50s in oakland, mountain view and morgan hill, and 48 degrees in half moon bay. here is a smoky haze at san rafael. 50 degrees in santa rosa. 48 in napa. 52 in novato. 53 at concord and livermore. now we see the smoke over san jose, and these are our forecast features. the smoky haze will be with us through tuesday. we may see slight improvement in air quality tomorrow as we expect a little bit of a sea breeze to develop. then rain will arrive next week, bringing with it cleaner air as well. we are eagerly waiting for that. this smoke forecast animation shows these darker colors here representing the heaviest concentration of smoke. as we go into the weekend, notice how lighter colors show up on the map here in the san francisco bay area. that means, of course, slight improvement in the air quality, but i emphasize slight because we do expect poor air quality generally to remain with us through the week

(ken) state senator scott weiner unveiled a bill to help fight the car break-in epidemic. weiner is partnering with san francisco district attorney george gascon to close a loophole in the penal code. they say it allows some auto burglars to escape consequences. the bill will eliminate the requirement that to prove an auto burglary...it must be proven that the door was locked..even if evidence shows a window was broken. officials say closing this loophole will make neighborhoods safer.
