what we're doing with this right now is the san francisco housing code requires the city and county of san francisco to do inspections of participate buildings and hotels at least once every five years. so while we're going thus thru this process, we're inserting this particular affidavit and notification in the appointment request letters going out to the property owners so that we could have a field inspector actually explain this process. this is not meant to necessarily be always done at the same time. we're just introducing it this time to get the information out to the property owners so say that know that this particular requirement exists. why do we put this in the code? we put it in the code because we realize that the -- with the amount of buildings we have out there, their type of construction, the age of these buildings and the amount of inspectors we have, we can't really get at the issues with decks, failure, dry rot and all these issues just with the staff we have. so one of the things that we're wanting the proper owners to do, to regularly survey their buildings for this kind of ob

code say you are permitted to extend existing electrical systems. knob and tube systems which are common in san francisco in older buildings don't have to be replaced.ou don't have to upgrade the system because it's older wiring. it's safe and may be extended as necessary to serve new fixtures. that's in the historic building code and regular electrical code. you can often find the wonderful fixtures in salvage yards. >> you have comments? there are a couple of shops you can take this to them and they will rewire it with modern wiring. sometimes, because we have combination gas and electric fixtures they rewire the old gas fixtures as well. there are resources availables to getting them fixed up. >> this one needs more than rewiring but. as far as background, the san francisco administrative code requires that 2% of all above- ground construction cost for new buildings is set aside for arts enrichment. historically, those resources have been through the arts commission. 2% has to be set aside for arts enrichment. that money then gets sent to the arts commission. they distribute it for us. in 2004, we were advised via the city attorney's office that the p.u.c., unlike other agencies, had full destructiodiscretion. that means we can partner and collaborate with the arts commissions, or we could commission them in house, if we wanted to. it's a different type of authority that the p.u.c. has. next slide. we wanted to give you examples of the types of projects that have been supported in partnership with the arts commission. we've had a productive working relationship with the arts commission. they bring to the table a lot of expertise around art that the p.u.c. does not have. here is an example. you may remember it. it was a large spider. it was recognized as the best public art piece the year it was put up. this next piece of work may also be familiar

san francisco. that is all. thank you. >> is there any public comment on the president's announcements? >> item 3. update on vacant buildings/ blight issue. >> good morning, president, commissioners. john henson, acting director of code enforcement. i want to thank you for your opening remarks. i must insist we are only as good as the fine building inspection support staff we have. this was put on by questions from members at the last hearing. the questions related to the vacant amendment buildings. this is a new ordinance that was subject to a building code, as a result of the board of supervisors. the effective date was september 2009. code section 103.4. this ordinance requires annual registration, a registration fee to be paid [inaudible] before you you have a packet listing 427 active addresses. of those, 291 have paid and registered their buildings. the balance are in different stages of the code enforcement process. keep in mind, over the past two years or so, there were 300 other buildings that were evaluated. the owners responded and provided us with industry documents and information. they were declared as not needed to be on the active list. commissioner murphy: what is the annual fee for that? >> $765. th
