two senators would like to offer california teacher to stay in the state despite the high living cost that are pushing them out. peggy bunker joins us from san francisco with that story. >> reporter: a new bill to tackle california's teacher's shortage has this san francisco math teacher hopeful after watching many of his colleaguing leave because they can't afford to live here. >> i know people who have had the leave the profession or move cities because of how much it costs to live here zblb. >> reporter: the teacher recruitment and retention act of 2017 would exempt teachers from paying state taxes after five years in the classroom. the average salary for a california teacher is around $59,000 a year. supporters say the tax break would be equivalent to a 4% to 6% raise. now the goal of the bill is to keep teachers in the state. according to the teacher's retirement systems, they're leaving 50% faster than any other job. >> san francisco teachers want to be here and stay here. >> reporter: the principle said that the teacher tax bream would make a huge difference. >> i think it would change their life significantly. i would be happy to see that happ

san francisco police search for the driver behind a recent hit-and-run. a new report shows an alarming spike in pedestrian deaths across california. kpix 5's lisa chan is live in san francisco with the details. >> reporter: kenny, this is the intersection where a car struck a pedestrian on wednesday. now a new report shows that pedestrian fatalities are up 25% in the u.s. since 2010. now, in the last two years, the number of pedestrians dying in crashes has gone up 22%. this is the highest in decades. the governor's highway safety association did the study and is it shows pedestrians aren't looking both ways and are distracted by their phones. another big issue is alcohol. 15% of accidents with pedestrians involved a drunk driver. 34% of those killed were walking drunk. now most of these accidents happened at night. but the hit-and-run that nearly killed a 76-year-old woman here in north beach happened at 3 p.m. the woman had life-threatening injuries. now, witnesses say the car sped off down columbus street. so far, no arrests have been made. we are live in north beach this morning. lisa chan, kpix 5. >>> president trump's former
