yeah, mayor of san francisco. >> the city is extremely concerned about the emission of green house gasses and making san francisco a sustainable city. >> we need to find other ways to create energy without harm to the environment and this is one source. >> we have over 2 megawatts of solar on various city buildings. we are looking at tidal power and we're beginning to look at geothermal power. >> we're on the roof of the moscone center of san francisco and we have 2500 panels that power the center. >> here we are using real energy, energy from the sun, free energy from the sun coming in right here. this converts directly into electricity. >> all these technologies cost money. they don't make economic sense. solar never made economic sense. bio fuels never made economic sense. it's when it was adopted that it started making sense. >> some of them have challenges, that take a long time to prove out, but there's no reason that the challenge of where we will get tomorrow's energy in the united states should not produce a very, very large. >> san francisco is unique in the united states becaus

san francisco. particularly those who served as custodians of this great city. to say that what makes san francisco special and what makes the bay area special, and the state of california so remarkable is the ability to attract people from every conceivable walk of life, regardless of race or ethnicity or sexual orientation. this is a region and a state that prides itself on its diversity. i say this often because this deserves to be repeated often. we did not tolerate our diversity, we truly celebrate this. it is right to celebrate all of these differences. at the end of the day, those fundamental aspects of our lives are what we all show. what we are doing today is sharing the values of the region and the state. we pride ourselves in being the most diverse state in the most perverse democracy. we have seen this over every conceivable difference. the more that i go out, not just across the state but across the country and around the world, we have the privilege of visiting people for every conceivable walk of life. and i truly believe that people look to us to

san francisco. i remember all the community meetings of on the hill. all over. we were all over the city having community meetings about the basic future of san francisco and what kind of city we wanted. were we a city of neighborhoods, or were we just going to find a suburbanized san francisco as our future? that was the debate, and home depot had to come to the table, spend a great deal of time with supervisor maxwell. the other supervisors wanted nothing to do with it at the time. but supervisor maxwell was open and wanted to make sure if there was ever going to be a retailer like that or a big box like this, that there had to be some strong commitments to the community, and they needed to take shape in a private meeting. they needed to be on paper. they needed to be in writing, and we needed to make sure the attorneys were there so that all those commitments were enforceable. then, home depot, out of nowhere, decided to take off, just like sirens on that engine, and all that work, the macroeconomics of the world started to change, and they decided they had gone through the entire pro

thank you for wanting to serve the city and county of san francisco. this is an opportunity to make brief remarks about the nomination, and provides an opportunity for us to ask questions. we have been joined by the president of the board of supervisors. >> what i would like to let you know, is who i am. i have put together a little bit of something. i want to say breedings, and good morning to campos, alioto- pier, and erik mar. i am born and raised in san francisco. i attended school at st. michael's high school, a sacred heart high school, sacramento city college. i graduated from golden gate university with a master's in business. my first job was as a bike messenger at age 16. i love my job and i learned every street and alley way in this great city. i have been in the wine and spirits industry 38 years. i was working with small businesses such as grocery stores and restaurants and hotels. over the years, i worked up the ladder, and started my career in south san francisco in 1968. in 1962, -- 1972, the mckessen company bought the boreaux company

san francisco city workers who have enjoyed free parking for years by leaving notes or placards on their dash boards are about to lose that perk. according to the san francisco examiner, the metropolitan transportation agency is expected to approve a code amendment tomorrow banning the informal practice. if approved, city workers will have to purchase a $924 annual parking permit beginning january 1st. the elimination of free parking percs is expected to generate $3.5 million a year for the cash-strapped agency. >> the san mateo city council is expected to approve a $5 hike in parking fines today. most fees range from 35 to $40. it increase is intended to make up for the extra money the state is taking from each parking fine. san mateo raised fines just last year. also today the city council is expected to sign off on buying 13 new police cars to replace aging vehicles. the new patrol cars will cost $315,000 apiece. 5:06 now. let's call mike in and find out what's going on with the weather. >> pulling your short sleeves back out is what's going on. >> mostly yesterday outside and a twing

the consumer product safety commission to increase its focus on chemical hazards in toys. >>> san francisco city leaders are fuming over a cigarette marketing campaign that features one of the city's most popular neighborhoods. san francisco city attorney fired off a letter to tobacco company r.j. reynolds telling the company to extinguish its new break free adventure campaign. the company is selling a limited edition box commemorating the haid ashberry neighborhood. he said it is exploiting the image to target young people. a spokesman says the campaign is marketed toward adult smokers. >>> doctors, pharmacists and patients are struggling with a nationwide prescription drug shortage, which experts say is the worst they have seen in three decades. some chemotherapy patients have been told to reschedule their appointments for when the medication becomes available. the shortages are caused by manufacturers who can't keep up with demand. there are production delays, ingredient shortages and tough competition from other drug makers. not just cancer drugs are involved. hospitals say pain killers like

san francisco. it could affect the morning commute in the busy part of the city. aig debro is live in san francisco to let us know what's going on. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning. we don't have an exact route for them right now. my guess is since the protest is about the transbay terminal, that they will go around the block. they are out here protesting what they are calling unfair treatment and unfair distribution of the federal stimulus act. we showed you these pictures from newschopper2 just a few moments ago. the truckers are staged at mandel and cargo. this is south of at&t ballpark and from there they caravan to the transbay terminal. now, the truckers say the jobs that are being -- the contractors are giving the jobs to people who are gonna work for less money. therefore, they are being shut out of the jobs here and to -- and to, i guess, you could say register their discontent, they are having this caravan of trucks. it's not just the federal stimulus money they are angry about not giving. truckers are also upset that the city of san francis
