>>> gavin newsom is heading to sacramento to be the lieutenant governor and san francisco city supervisors tried to decide who his replacement should be. we look at the names and what is ahead for the city supervisors. >>> dan kerman joins us live outside san francisco city hall with the top story. any decision? >> reporter: no decision. they met for five hours and we don't have an interim mayor. the first thing that happened at 5:00 to in afternoon, the board's attorneys said they couldn't select a mayor because gavin newsom is still the mayor. but the board decided to select someone. the majority on the board thought they had the six votes needed to select mike hennessey but they only got five votes. they were hoping that one of the supervisors would come over to their side. but duffity called for a half hour recess and he contacted gavin newsom. when he came back not only did ed lee have his vote but he had a total of six votes and those who are not part of the majority. at that point they called for another recess. bev said this is why he decided to support ed lee. >> one of the things

yeah, mayor of san francisco. >> the city is extremely concerned about the emission of green house gassesing san francisco a sustainable city. >> we need to find other ways to create energy without harm to the environment and this is one source. >> we have over 2 megawatts of solar on various city buildings. we are looking at tidal power and we're beginning to look at geothermal power. >> we're on the roof of the moscone center of san francisco and we have 2500 panels that power the center. >> here we are using real energy, energy from the sun, free energy from the sun coming in right here. this converts directly into electricity. >> all these technologies cost money. they don't make economic sense. solar never made economic sense. bio fuels never made economic sense. it's when it was adopted that it started making sense. >> some of them have challenges, that take a long time to prove out, but there's no reason that the challenge of where we will get tomorrow's energy in the united states should not produce a very, very large. >> san francisco is unique in the united states because we ser

and i'm truly afraid that san francisco is in danger of becoming a second class city when compared to northern american cities are doing, particularly with their public rights of way. why? what is it about the streets of san francisco that make them so mean and hard to deal with? it's not difficult to figure it out. you're -- so many of you sitting here are pros. you know. the width, the amount of space for vehicles curb to curb dimensions are incredibly too wide. you have to know that. every time i'mñr on castro street, ani live between noe valley and diamonds heights, and i pass 24th street and castro and i look at that space and i know that in the center, in the center you could have a wonderful local park going three blocks long that would be -- could be every bit as promises as is hayes green. so the width. curb cuts. the incredible problems associated with curb cuts. but there are solutions to that especially in any new development and in changing what you have. the wide walks without any planting and the obliqueness ness -- bleakness that comes with that, with no trees or stran

san francisco city administrator arrived. tomorrow the newly sworn in board of supervisors is expected to vote to appoint lee as interim mayor. at the top of lee's priorities will be appointing a new police chief. >> i think it's unfair to transfer the unfinished business to mr. lee in the way it's been done. >> reporter: today chief gascon started his new job as district attorney. gascon says that the change caught officers off guard. >> i myself feel very conflicted. >> reporter: but many are concerned about the upheaval in the chief's office. former assistant chief gadon will serve as temporary chief. but that chief may only last until november. that would mean another change. >> it's not healthy for the city, for public safety or for the police department. >> i think we need somebody to come in there and make a long term commitment. i personally think that person now after this latest test of going outside, i think we know need to go back inside. >> reporter: so it may all seem a bit like musical chairs in san francisco,

san francisco. san francisco will be the host city for america's next cup yacht race in 2013. ristine yubla standing by for us tonight. christi christine? >> the competition will take place in our backyard as san francisco was selected as host for the world cup in 2013 beating out the likes of newport, rhode island and other cities. san francisco becomes the first city in nearly two decades to host the world premier event. when they won the world cup back in february, it was almost a foregone conclusion that san francisco would be picked to host the next cup considering the winner gets to pick where it will prercht its entitle. they have seized a tremendous opportunity to showcase in san francisco bay, provide jobs and more than a $1 million boost to this city's economy. the race is expected to create close to 8,000 jobs. quite a bit of work will need to take place before the 34th america's cup as many of san francisco's city-managed piers will need to be renovated. preliminary races are set to begin in san francisco in 2012. tom, back to you. >> boy, a lot is happening here in

. >> san francisco police say it's great news for the city. violent crime is down even though the police ranks were thinner last year. simon perez is in san francisco, where the police chief just released the new numbers. simon. >> reporter: sydnie, the police chief says 2010 was a pretty goodyear in san francisco despite the fact that the number of homicides was up compared to the year before. how can he say that? looking at the big picture, things haven't been this safe in san francisco in decades. san francisco police chief george gascon highlighted what he calls a successful crime fighter year particularly pleasing for the chief the number of homicides with have dropped from 98 in 2008 to 45 in 2009 to 50 last year. despite last year's rise the numbers are low. >> while we did have 5 more homicides than we did last year, it still -- the numbers are historically low. >> reporter: there is more. violence and property crimes dropped from 2009 to 2010 by 8%. and when you go back to 2008, they have gone down by 12%. >> we have some significant r
