. >>> san francisco's city hall same sex cup ms wanted to get married on this valentine's day. several of the couples ended up getting arrested today. >> reporter: gasia, eight same sex couples walked into san francisco city hall this afternoon asking for marriage licenses. they walked out about an hour later with one of these, an arrest citation. dozens of couples were getting married at san francisco's city hall this valentine's day, some same sex couples were asking the county clerk for marriage licenses even though they knew what the answer would be. >> same sex marriages are not legal. >> reporter: eight couples and two supporters sat down in an act of civil disobedience. the deputies gave warnings. and they were arrested for unlawful assembly. the couples were tied together in custody. >> we want to get legally married in our lifetime. >> reporter: they received citations and quickly released. >> you're being led to a detaining room for asking to be married. it's not right. it's hard to deal with and very emotional. >> reporter: moments later this couple got married. >> it

san francisco in 1984 and grew up in the bayview-hunters point area. he attended san francisco schools including visitation valley middle school as well as san francisco city college. desmond has played with the san francisco pop warner football league. i believe it was the rams, right? excuse me, i stand corrected. he went on to a successful athletic career at uc-berkeley, including leading the pac-10 conference in tackles in 2006. in 2007, desmond was drafted by the packers. today, we are so blessed to be joined by dennis and sherry, the parents of desmond. please come to the podium. [applause] this recognition has been earned not only by desmond himself but also the mother and father who created this. [applause] i also would like to add back dennis and sherry also serve as a shining example of the african-american family together, high school sweethearts remaining intact and raising healthy children. [applause] there is more to this legacy. originally started with a man by the name of mr. curley bishop. please join us at the podium as well. confidence and making the commitment to bringing the america's cup to the presidio san francisco. -- to the great cityn francisco. we are extremely proud to be coming to this great city. we are going to tell you a little bit more about what the america's cup coming to the city will really mean. i think it is right to say that we stand on the edge of an event that will provide enormous drama and theater over the next three years and add to the rich history of the america's cup. in a way, it is a gorgeous marriage between a great event and a great city. we know that the city of san francisco will embrace this america's cup like none other before. like the mayor said, it's likely to bring in something in the region of 10 million visitors from outside of the city to enjoy this event. this is something really special and really big. and this is one of the reasons why. please take a look at the screens. this is truly unique in the history of the america's cup. the ability to stage the entire race in the harbor in view of hundreds of thousands of spectators lining the shores in addition to millions of people

[applause] >> good evening, everyone. thank you so much for celebrating -- joining us on this joyous occasion. welcoming and celebrating lunar new year. i am delighted to be your mistress of ceremonies this evening. this year, the chinese new year started on thursday, february 3. lunar new year, 4709, symbolized by the year of the hare. we all know it as a chinese new year but lunar new year was actually celebrated by many ethnic groups within the asian american pacific families, including vietnamese-americans, caribbean-americans, and others. in san francisco, we celebrated with

cash can improve communities. >>> and san francisco is trying to come up with a plan to entize facebook to san francisco. >> reporter: a bigger plan is in place. city officials hope twitter will help transform this blithed san francisco neighborhood. >> the money right now has been so tight. it's going to take some very wealthy people to develop it. >> this is our opportunity to really bring an anchor in that will really change. >> reporter: san francisco city leaders presented a plan for twitter to develop the area. city officials want twitter to take over the block long marked building. the hopes is that other business will follow and fill the area. >> twitter today has 350 employees, their expectation by the end of year is over 600. and in two to three years it is up to 3,000 employees. >> reporter: talks with twitter also focused on public safety and public transit. >> there is a bus line that they wanted to see happen with nummi so we connected them with nummi to make sure there would be very efficient bus service. >> reporter: the co-owner of show dogs says he would welcome twitter as a neighbor while warning one company cannot save the entir

san francisco. san francisco is a very diverse city. like it because we don't discriminate based on who you are or what you do. we do this because we are the city that is open to all that come here. i appreciate that. i feel strongly that san francisco is a place where anyone can come and feel free to live. the scholarship was very important to me, bested his could feel free to go to the university and obtained a great education. i am thrilled i can give back through the mta because it was you who confirmed my appointment and i thank you. i would like to recognize one of the oldest civil rights organization in this city which is the naacp which is led by dr. brown who continues to fight for injustice for all. as we continue it in san francisco, i would like to thank my church family, of the naacp, the city and county of san francisco, and i would like to thank my mom who is here and i would like to recognize her. can you please stand? san francisco's first asian-american mayor. as a chinese american, i'm well aware of my community's long and troubled and proud history in this city. the san francisco of old was directly involved in racism and neglect. the san francisco that i fought as an attorney began to change. and now today, our struggle is here and it's succeeding. [applause] i am humbled to stand before you today on the shoulders of giants among many flagbearers on the day we moved that history forward. and i'm committed to move all san francisco, all of us, forward. and that is why i've accepted this awesome responsibility. so i hope you will join me. i intend to reach out to you, my colleagues, to my fellow citizens across all political lines and all potential barriers. there are so many talented people in this building and in this city. i know we can move san francisco forward together. and in the coming days, i will reach out to every member of the board of supervisors and meet with you personally to discuss my ideas and my agenda. and yes, president chiu, i will sit down with you, shortly, to work out the details of our question-and-answer session. i
