[applause] thank you. it still saddens me when you saw the only in the first filipino ever elected in san francisco, but it is always such an honor to be here with my community, and i want to thank you all for this celebration. we really have so much to celebrate, and i wanted to make sure we acknowledge this month alone and some of the things we have been able to accomplish. as the council general mentioned, ab 199 finally acknowledges the work and the tremendous bravery of our soldiers in world war ii, who will be written into our history books. we're going to make sure that happens. the dream act that was signed by governor brown, which will enable our immigrant students to go on to college and applied for the funding they need to move forward. we had a wonderful celebration with the filipino women's network, he brought forward 100 of our most influential philli

their electric utilities, municipalities, and they are ngo's as well, including cities like san francisco. i wanted to personally take this moment to applaud the city of san francisco for leading the way in electrification under mayor lee's leadership. and really, the last example i want to share is whenever i travel around the country, i use examples that i get from the city of san francisco as some of the ways they want to understand how they can become electrify -- what do they do? how do they do it? i use many examples from this great city. i wanted to applaud you again for that. we do have the focus electric. if you do have extensive empty water bottles, we take them over there. with a partnership, we recycle those. and the cloth seats in the focus electric are made out of that material. if you get a chance, come over and see that. and we had our gatecrashers -- we have our mobile app. thank you. [applause] >> san francisco recreation and parks department for hosting us here today. i am the president and ceo of recology. we're here to celebrate another environmental success for the city of san francisco. in 1996, we began taking food waste and trying to figure out what to do with it and realized we could composted. we begin a collection program on a pilot basis in 1997, but by about 2006 or so that program was then offered to every resident, every business in the city. we are now taking about 600 tons a day of organic matter and turning it into compost. it is a program that everyone in the city has participated in. if you have never put anything in a green bin. every restaurant, business, resident, and school all have participated. we met at their restaurant at fisherman's wharf last november to acknowledge that we had collected 1 million tons of organic matter that could be composted, and now today we have returned the product of that 1 million tons here to how many farms that

city. san francisco is a forward- thinking city. with that, i want to bring up the director of the department, melanie nutter. >> good morning. i am so pleased to be here today to celebrate this environmental milestone. as you have heard, we would not be here today without the broad coalition of support and the ongoing collaboration that came together around ensuring we could reduce carbon emissions from our taxi fleet coming here in san francisco. the san francisco department of the environment is proud to have been a partner in insuring san francisco's taxi fleet is the greenest in the nation. first, on the policy front, in 2007, 2008, our department staff work with the taxi commission and cab companies to create the green tax ordinance. this collaboration resulted in a performance standard, requiring taxi companies achieve over all the emission reductions each year without mandating specific models. as long as each company's fleet met the required performance standard at an average level of greenhouse gas reductions every year, t

immigration advocates rallied outside san francisco's city hall today. san francisco is one of several bay area cities that asked the supreme court to overturn as the 1070. dan crawford reports it could be a tough battle for the lost critics. just as anthony kennedy the key swing vote talked of a federal government without the money or resources to enforce our immigration laws and state struggling with social disruption and economic disruption from illegal immigrants. >>> he asked why couldn't those states enact laws to correct this problem? donald really representing the obama's administration says the states have no say. the constitution vests and exclusive authority over immigration with the national government. the administration sued arizona to block the law and is also targeting similar laws in alabama and georgia indiana south carolina and utah. did police arizona says that law doesn't conflict with a federal effort and today the justices appeared skeptical of the administration's broad attack. this seemed ready to uphold the laws most controversia

for the last five years, san francisco city funded nonprofits have not gotten an increase from the city. during that same time, health care costs have gone up an average of 10% to 20% for these organizations, workers' comp costs have gone up, workers are under more pressure. flat funding is a cut. along with the budget justice, we are asking for an increase this year for nonprofits. we would like your support in getting that. thank you. [applause] >> my name is darnell boyd and i am a tenant organizer. i am also a tenant representative at the mission hotel. when i got here two years ago, i used to run from the emergency shelter to the hospitality house, in the rain. the hospitality house helped me a lot. i used to have to run past people huddled over in doorways, in the rain, sleeping in wheelchairs'. i used to think, how can a city -- a rich city -- let people sleep like that? now that i'm on my feet, i still look over in the mission district, people huddled in doorways, sleeping under tarps, and these are human beings, u.s. citizens, and they need help. we should do more, we should ad

trend in this project that shifts cost and responsibility and in providing health care to the city, san francisco taxpayers and your budget that the city of san francisco is currently struggling with right now. you know, there has been a lot of stories about the health care that people have received, which is great. it's a hospital. they're supposed to provide health care. it's like saying that our nurses took care of them in the hospital. they're supposed to do that. the problem is they still don't do enough, even with everything that they do, the deal says that they can do less charity care than they are currently doing now. so they actually can lower the bar when it comes to charity care and it's been a fight for years to get them to do their fair share around charity care. in the area of cathedral hill, this is not an area where the environmental impacts can be mitigated in this plan. they cannot. you can't say that you increase traffic and somehow the impacts go down. there are so many faulty pieces in this plan that they have put forward that don't really explore the alternative where you w

i moved here for many of the reasons that i think we're all here in san francisco. we're a city of compehensive immigration refoimmigrants. we know that san francisco was built on the backs of immigrant labor. we also know that for the past 10 years on so, it has been fairly dark nationwide for our immigrant community. we've had a new record number of rates belief had a tremendous backlog of applications of legal immigrants that are trying to become citizens. there have been countless stories of constitutional and civil rights violated of many of our family members and friends. i used to be an immigrant rights attorney. i can tell you firsthand that i would visit the ins detention center and see individuals who had been beaten by ice agents. this conversation cannot be more timely and more important with the new administration and a new recognition and importance of building an immigrants rights movement. hopefully we will soon get healthcare reform behind us. hopefully the next question that our nation grapples with is how do we tell you the constitutional and civil rights that

city. tourism is one of the most important economic activities in san francisco. there's great concern by neighborhood groups that economic activity is not going to reach the further out neighborhoods in the city during the america's cup. we would love to work with the city family to encourage america's cup visitors and locals to go out and experience all that the city has to offer in the various neighborhoods. we look forward to pursuing the opportunities and shared interests with the city. >> with car sharing, we're lucky to be part of an industry that has addressed these things in the past. we have great leaders like zip car that have led the way and fought the battles on car sharing. it is a different activity. it has different iopportunities. we are working proactively to have conversations to educate people to understand how it is different even from car sharing. this is real people, real cars. we think it has even broader environmental and community implications. we got a $one. 7 million grant from the federal highway administration to launch a three-year st
