san francisco. and that money would go directly to supporting city college of san francisco. city college is the largest work force training center in san francisco. we train students. we also help students learn english as a second language and then of course one of our primary missions is to help students, particularly low income and underserved students, move on to 4 year institutions. we serve nearly 100,000 students in san francisco and are a tremendous resource, we think, for san francisco. the last couple years the state budget cuts we faced, $53 million in the last 3 years alone, have really made it a challenge for us to keep our doors open for san francisco students and this proposition a would make a tremendous difference in addressing our fiscal problems right now. >> understood. thank you. starchild, can you present some of the thoughts around the opposition? >> sure. we all believe in people getting an education and having those opportunities be affordable and accessible to them, but city college's financial problems, we believe, are not due to state budget cuts p

john sasaki is live where san francisco's past and present are coming together tonight. >> reporter: hundreds of people are gathered in and around the steps of san francisco city hall. that right now that the music that you here is the san francisco's gay chorus singing to honor these two san francisco legends. as surprising as it may seem, it's been 37 years since mayor masconi and harvey milk were gunned down. every year the city residents come together to show the impact the two had on the city of san francisco. we've heard from a number of dignitaries. you were friend with harvey milk. tell me what really has happened in the 37 years? do you think we've gotten to the point where he would be proud. >> i think we really have. i think he would think we still have challenges. he was focused on many civil justices, obviously gay and lesbian rights. but also immigration he started to connect the dots. i think that their deaths informed the city of san francisco to people sometimes to rise up and say, as san francisco values. but we know what we're about. we know we push the envelope and we've always been rewarded for that. >> now, harvey milk had a movie made ab

>> today marks 34 years since former san francisco supervisor dan white shot and killed mayor moscone and harvey milk. a supervisor will be held at san francisco city hall followed by milk's camera store. he shot and killed them inside san francisco city hall in 1978. he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and served five years of a seven-year sentence. white committed suicide in 1985. >>> teachers at antioch unified school are angry and frustrated about their pay. they say they've not had a raise in four years and they are in talks over a new contract. they claim the district should be able to give them raises now, especially with the passage of proposition 30. the teachers say the school district has millions in reserve fund. the district said the money was set aside because of uncertainty with state funds. >>> the martinez city council is reacting to complaints about panhandlers harassing people and now aggressive solicitation has been banned. the ordinance defines aggressive as creating a reasonable fear for personal safety. it also bans panhandling within ten feet of intersections and exits and onramps. police cannot give a citation but ca

against the plan, said that it gave san francisco a benefit that other regions in the south bay and east bay would not share. would you support san francisco using city taxpayer dollars to pay mtc for the cost of providing free muni service to young people in san francisco? in other words, if mtc isn't willing to do it on its own, should the city be paying more money into mtc to get the service out of mtc? >> as a last resort. that would be certainly the last way of funding it that i would look at. there is a continuity problem between the different transportation agencies that make it a little bit unworkable. at this present time i think one of the ways to deal with the issue is to see if the nuts and bolts of it can be tweaked a little bit to make it into a workable solution. maybe that may take a little bit more time, but i don't think as a sort of knee-jerk reaction we need to put the burden on taxpayers. with that being said it's vitally important for people to get around and especially those who can't afford and if you are a young person, i think that is a very important consideration as well. again, the focus should be on tweaking the nuts and
