san francisco railway. that he said would be the nucleus that would host the city. san francisco gave further incentive to expand the city's network. a project by way of tunnel leading into chinatown by way of north beach. in december the first streetcar was driven into the tunnel. just two years after its berth, muni had added two lines. and k, l and m lines that span out from westportal. in 1928, the j line opened heading west to the beach. in 1944 san francisco voters finally approved muni take-over of the market street railway. by then motor bus and trolley bus improvement had given them the ability to conquer san francisco's hills. after the war most of the street-car lines would be replaced with motor or trolley bus service. in 1947, the mayor recommended replacing two lines with motor coaches. and it appeared that san francisco's iconic cable cars had seen their final days. entered mrs. cluskin, the leader to save the cable cars. arguing that the cable cars were a symbol of the city, and she entered a charter placed on the november ballot. it passed overwhelml

i believe the people of the city and county of san francisco should be heartened that it was the leaders of the city and county of san francisco and their police department who asked for the independent eyes to come forward. so it's all about working together. and i got to tell you, public safety is as much a team sport as anything you've seen on tv in the last 24 hours. we have to do this together. nothing is more important than public safety. nothing is more important than public trust. we hope to build that public trust by working through this memorandum of understanding. and if i can send one last message to the people of this great city and county in san francisco, this is the work that we must do. we hope that what is done here will become a model for what other communities can do. i will tell you that the work at the department of justice won't end with this. in the next few months, the men and women in uniform here in san francisco will start to employ the work that they must do now to make sure that identity profiling is not something that is a reality anywhere. we'll begin to s

san francisco health code will prohibit smoking in the rooftop park. smoking is already prohibited in any unenclosed area of any property in the city and county of san francisco open to the public and under the jurisdiction of rec and park or any other city department. if the property is a park or other property used for recreational purposes. in this case, the city department will include tjpa with respect to rooftop park. also parallel with the approach applied at yerba buena gardens, the tjpa would retain ownership, jurisdiction and control of the park, so tjpa has established park hours. winter hours are 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and summer hours are 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. tjpa would designate persons to perform functions for the rooftop park which are otherwise performed by the general manager of san francisco recreation and park department for any other park in the city. we anticipate that the best way to maintain an inviting and safe atmosphere in the park and to ensure compliance with rules and regulations is through a layered security program that includes jishs u includes use of ambassadors and security. they'll have the power to cite and arrest and r
