it's important for san francisco because if we don't have all of the people in our city, if we don't have all of the folks in california, california and san francisco stand to lose billions of dollars in funding. >> it's really important to the city of san francisco that the federal government gets the count right, so we've created count sf to motivate all -- sf count to motivate all citizens to participate in the census. >> for the immigrant community, a lot of people aren't sure whether they should take part, whether this is something for u.s. citizens or whether it's something for anybody who's in the yunited states, and it is something for everybody. census counts the entire population. >> we've given out $2 million to over 30 community-based organizations to help people do the census in the communities where they live and work. we've also partnered with the public libraries here in the city and also the public schools to make sure there are informational materials to make sure the folks do the census at those sites, as well, and we've initiated a campaign to motivate the citizens

cutting down and just allowing the state to dictate the type of education that the city should provide. san francisco has always fought to be a unique city that has its own values and follow its own path regardless of what the state wants to see. we all recognize san francisco as a city of trailblazing, a city that the entire nation looks at. and when we fail, the entire nation and the entire people that are trying to push the values that we have in san francisco fail as well. city college of san francisco is an incredibly important institution, not just to san francisco but to the movement of education as a human right as something that we all deserve every day of our lives for the entire time we are alive. education is not about degrees. it is not about transfers. while those things are important, it is not the goal of education. and it shouldn't be on a human level. and i appreciate the supervisors who see that. i encourage you all to sign onto this so we can save our spring 2020 enrollment. >> thank you. next speaker. >> hi. my name is rick. i teach part time at city college. i'm speaking as a me

san francisco. i personally am a graduate of the city college of san francisco. my father died when i was 14, and i was not a very good high school student, and so city college was the only option for me. i spent 3.5 years there, and from there, i transferred to a four-year university. and my husband is also a graduate, and also my three children attended the child development classes at city college, so we are a city college family. i recognize that the timeline for the supplemental funding is incredibly late and that registration for these classes has already begun. i do not know whether this funding will come in time to save these classes from the proposed cuts, but i do know that this is an institution that we need to support as a city and county. city college is an institution of opportunity for students of color and working class people to better themselves and invest in their own futures, future city college is san francisco. i will say this is the beginning of many conversations about not only this funding but also what long-term support looks like for thi

i'm kelly, i teach political science at city college of san francisco. and you heard all the comments about what has gone on at city college. i thought the last comments a woman made before about what happened in chile was relevant to what i was going to talk about. all these different pieces that are being done at city college, it's lots of pieces, classes that have historically been between 20 and 28 have now been eliminated. that includes a class i've been teaching since 2012 called, and this is going to be ironic to start, the politics of globalization. and what i teach about in one of the sections is how austerity measures around the world are implemented. and they are implemented through a series of shocks. so they do things like they threaten to close down city college or they threaten to -- no money in the new york city fiscal crisis or the greek debt crisis or the i.m. f. restructuring plans. you name it, it goes on and on and on. and of course now ironically, this is happening at city college. and the class that students have been taking since 2

i've worked all over the world, and san francisco remains the only city that i felt was my home. san francisco has assembled all of the pieces that we need in order to create dramatic and progressive change. we've got a visionary m.t.a. board that i cannot wait to work for. we have the most talented agency staff in the industry. we have a tenacious and hard-driving mayor who i know will make a great partner. we also have a progressive board of supervisors ready to ask the tough questions. i am ready to serve all of them. i don't have a 30 or 100-day plan. my first task is to listen carefully to staff. we do have the most incredible assembly of talent of any city in the country. i trust their professional expertise. it is my job first to listen and then secondly, and more importantly, to remove obstacles so that they can do their good and productive work. i do not know all of the answers yet. it's going to take me a while to learn from staff what the best answers are. i want to close by saying that we have talent, resources and some clarity about what our resources are in san franc

thank chief lozar and those with the san francisco police department who will help craft this ordinance. with this ordinance, it will now be the policy of the city and county of san francisco and the san francisco police department to actively seek a gun violence restraining order whenever appropriate to disarm those who would harm themselves or others and to give those who would be victims of crime every advantage of making sure they have all tools to protect themselves. the final step to ensuring this policy has the maximum impact is to work with all of our community partners and the public about the availability of gvros. we must educate hospitals, community health organizations, all of our nonprofits and all of our city departments about this new policy. women, peers, colleagues, and victims of violence no longer need to suffer under the threat of someone with a firearm, and everyone needs to know about this legislation. there is no single way to win the fight against the gun violence epidemic plaguing this nation, but we will not win unless we urgently pass legislation needed to prevent gun violence and swiftly implement all policies. i als
