san francisco. i personally am a graduate of the city college of san francisco. my father died when i was 14, and i was not a very good high school student, and so city college was the only option for me. i spent 3.5 years there, and from there, i transferred to a four-year university. and my husband is also a graduate, and also my three children attended the child development classes at city college, so we are a city college family. i recognize that the timeline for the supplemental funding is incredibly late and that registration for these classes has already begun. i do not know whether this funding will come in time to save these classes from the proposed cuts, but i do know that this is an institution that we need to support as a city and county. city college is an institution of opportunity for students of color and working class people to better themselves and invest in their own futures, future city college is san francisco. i will say this is the beginning of many conversations about not only this funding but also what long-term support looks like for thi

i'm kelly, i teach political science at city college of san francisco. and you heard all the comments about what has gone on at city college. i thought the last comments a woman made before about what happened in chile was relevant to what i was going to talk about. all these different pieces that are being done at city college, it's lots of pieces, classes that have historically been between 20 and 28 have now been eliminated. that includes a class i've been teaching since 2012 called, and this is going to be ironic to start, the politics of globalization. and what i teach about in one of the sections is how austerity measures around the world are implemented. and they are implemented through a series of shocks. so they do things like they threaten to close down city college or they threaten to -- no money in the new york city fiscal crisis or the greek debt crisis or the i.m. f. restructuring plans. you name it, it goes on and on and on. and of course now ironically, this is happening at city college. and the class that students have been taking since 2

i've worked all over the world, and san francisco remains the only city that i felt was my home. san francisco has assembled all of the pieces that we need in order to create dramatic and progressive change. we've got a visionary m.t.a. board that i cannot wait to work for. we have the most talented agency staff in the industry. we have a tenacious and hard-driving mayor who i know will make a great partner. we also have a progressive board of supervisors ready to ask the tough questions. i am ready to serve all of them. i don't have a 30 or 100-day plan. my first task is to listen carefully to staff. we do have the most incredible assembly of talent of any city in the country. i trust their professional expertise. it is my job first to listen and then secondly, and more importantly, to remove obstacles so that they can do their good and productive work. i do not know all of the answers yet. it's going to take me a while to learn from staff what the best answers are. i want to close by saying that we have talent, resources and some clarity about what our resources are in san franc
