[cheers and applause] we can no longer turn a blind eye to the gun violence going on in our black community here. the families of this violence deserve justice. it is almost two years ago that my husband's cuss inwas murdered. the day before his murder, 6-year-old jason young was killed. i can never forget jason young's father saying, that he always knew that we as black people were disadvantaged as people but never expected to suffer that disadvantage as a victim. we can no longer allow this continue, no parent should have to bury their child and feel that they are alone in their pursuit of justice. they'll pay 54 million dollars to the city of san francisco settling a lawsuit alleging the company'sug addiction and overdoses. a city the city saw a 500% increase in opioid deaths between 2015 2020. pretty shocking numbers. there. joining me now to talk about this is city attorney david chiu. thank you so much for being here with us today. of course. thanks for having me on. david, your team's been working on this case since 2018? why go after these companies? and what's the role you believe they played in exacerbating the opioid issue? >> so in our we have provided evidence that these corporate were involved and significantly exacerbating our opioid crisis. that that what these companies did was they flooded san francisco with literally millions upon millions of prescription pain pills that led to a dramatic increase in addictions. overdoses overdose deaths and also led to the illegal market when it comes to drugs like heroin and street fentanyl. >> and we know that walgreens is still a defendant in this how soon are you expecting to get a response from them on this? >> so at this

city's most pressing issues. >> the time for finger pointing and blaming other people is over. >> with thunderous applause and a hand raised high, brook jenkins was sworn in as san francisco new district attorney. in a speech at city hall jenkins vowed to crack down on san francisco most pressing problems. she highlighted property crimes, smash and grab robberies and petty thefts. >> san francisco is being impacted by these types of crimes. we can no longer look at them as insignificant. >> she plans on enforcing the city's drug laws and ending the open air markets on the streets. she cited her professional experiences to hold repeat offenders accountable. >> we have to deal with repeat offenders is a top priority of how we deal with those consistently committing the most crime in san francisco and enforcing our drug crime laws. >> the mayor says jenkins will help bring balance to the city ensuring public safety and continuing responsible criminal justice reforms. >> it is not a one size fits all. we are not trying to imply that jail is the only solution because there are people with complex problems in this city. >> jenkins said she spoke with her predecessor on thursday

for months, san francisco city leaders including mayor london breed have vowed to crackdown on the crime and drugs in that area. just last week, san francisco's new d.a. brooke jenkins pledged the same. a lot of people working on this problem. is it getting any better? our sister station just spent weeks in the neighborhood. she followed parents who walk their kids to school every day and don't feel safe. she talked to people who live in the tenderloin about what they see on a daily basis and she spent time with those people that are working to get people off the streets and into housing. same concern. the pandemic only made the situation worse and fentanyl is also fueling the crisis. joining us tonight she is with me now. the tenderloin has been the topic of conversation for at least 25 years. it has been a problem, but a lot of people are now saying that it really is getting worse. >> reporter: that is right. it is getting worse. i wanted to go to this neighborhood to see if changes were happening. mayor london breed declared a state of emergency. i talked to parents, people who work t

city. woo we know san francisco is a special place and a lot of people tried to talk about san francisco in a not so favorable light and the fact is, we know the beauty of our city, we know the spirit of the city and know san francisco we are a compassionate city, we also are a city who believes in making hard decisions in order it get to a better place, so i want to make sure that in passing this budget and getting it through that we realize that even though the budget process is a challenging process, the real work begins. the implementation of the promises we made in this budget to move things forward, to get people hired for the purposes we need them hired for, to get the streets to be cleaner, to make sure that the streets are safer, to make sure that this beautiful city is what everyone knows it is and more both in the neighborhoods, those who visit from all over the world and people who work here and take public transportation and move about all over the city every day. it is a lot of work to be done and so we take this moment to sign the budget as a opportunity to just really recogn

even here locally in san francisco, there is room for improvement and we need to improve quickly at the san francisco board of supervisors hearing on the city'sresponse to the monkeypox virus. the focus was on resolving the primary issues associated with the efforts to vaccinate at-risk groups against the disease number getting more vaccines to san francisco, which will reduce the second biggest problem. the long wait time to get vaccinated. supervisor rafael mandelman describes a resident's recent experience. in fact on how had would probably waited for at least 12 hours for that vaccination because he had been at general 3 times prior waiting for hours each day. there is also uncertainty of the communities surrounding information about receiving the second dose. the second dose may not be coming. we should have had vaccines out to the states in large quantities. at the beginning of june. don't members from the federal government were in attendance at this hearing to answer questions about the inadequate response representing the local effort, the medical director of the san francisco city clinic doctor stephanie cole overall is of july 19th
