san francisco and take on this danger to our families, friends and neighbors. together, we can and will make a difference. >> thank you. now a few words from mike from the san francisco aids foundation. >> thank you. thank you very much. i'm a little bit nervous. i will read my statement here. i want to comment. i agree san francisco has been courageous. i'm very passionate about the work we do at this project and we have been working with meth users for over 15 years. i am a member of the task force and i was a member of the last task force years ago and the director of the foundation. it was funded in 1997 by michael seaver and served by gay and trans men who have sex by men and some trans women who have substance use concerns, including challenges with the use of crystal meth. it was founded as one of the first programs and as a result of one of the first treatment on demand recommendations over 20 years ago. our program allows participants to enter at all levels of substance use, misuse, and/or dependence. for a first 10 years, the project's focused our work specifically on substance use services and treatment solely within the intersection of meth -- matthews and h.i.v. transmi

my first job was the san francisco foundation and when i got in there my mentor was carole tatum, she first set me down and was like you know how to read and write and it wasn't good. so she made sure five days out of the week, two days out of that week i had to read and do reports for the san francisco foundation. that part right there saved me and then my son is a product of hunterspoint he was born in '88. he experienced juvenile. one thing i want to say about the system and being people, it take adults to help you. i might get emotional but it's a wonderful officer that my son to be dead because he called me on the phone a couple of times. i never even had met him. he was just like vanessa, i'm about to do something and i guarantee you he is still off the streets. and when my son got in custody, he was like mom, i didn't have them drugs on me. but just because i got the intervention that we about to get him off the streets for you vanessa. he would have been killed the night that officer espinoza. this was personal to me. nobody deserves to be locked up but it's just going to take

i'm a san francisco resident of d9 and i'm here with the san francisco aids foundation and advocacy network. i wanted to talk briefly about the city's commitment to getting to zero. zero hiv transmissions, zero hiv related deaths and stigma. this is an issue that impacts all of us. i particularly wanted to lift up people living with hiv and mental health care needs. people who are here and around in sanfrancisco when the epidemic first hit experienced a lot of trauma and lost a lot of their social support networks and to this day, they have a lot of really complex pyschosocial needs, including access to mental health services. they fought for future generations to be able to survive. and now, it's our turn to fight and to support them. we can't get to zero unless we address this crisis. part of that is acknowledging there are dozens people who die every year by suicide and that's unacceptable. i wanted to talk briefly about people who use drugs and how they deserve nonjudgmental services. many experience a lot of trauma on the street and oftentimes use substances to survive. every year we s
