san francisco municipal railway, our muni. it's the last physical railway and city landmark in 1985 and placed in the national historic places in 2010. at the corner of geneva avenues and 22 story office building and sipping -- single story car shed known as the space that was heavily damaged in the loma prieta earthquake. in 1988 the car barn was saved by a group called the friends of the geneva powerhouse friends formed to oppose the demolition of the car barn and stabilized it in 1999 to be used for recreational purposes and related uses consistent with the parks and recreation mission. on march 13, 2007, the city of san francisco board of supervisors appropriated $1444490 for the repair of the car barn. the friends developed a plan for the restoration and adapted uses of the car barn which included restoration of historic features and accessibility improvements and student lounge and retail spaces. the parks and recreation departmental indicated $880,000 towards the project. in 2009, as a result of the city budget deficit, the $144490 allocated to the car barn which rescinded. in response to this loss of funds these friends

san francisco that's led to the success that you talked about. when you talk about 36% local participation on public works last year and 34 and 35% since 2011, remember that right before you passed the historic landmark local hiring ordinances, 24 in the few years, 20 in the height of the great recession. so, to the speaker from trust for public lands, if you're still here, okay, i can give your card and share with you the report that local hiring does not increase costs. it actually -- we saw from the projects covered by local hire that costs actually decreased. so, that was important to know that this was really working to really put folks to work, not increase costs to the tax payers and not increase costs to folks like the donors who are going to potentially support these parks. so, but it is important. we do support taking more time to convene the mayor's construction work force advisory committee, the mayor has been very csus port i have of the implementation of the local hire ordinance. ~ and we wouldn't be where we were if we didn't have a chance to develop the community support, contractor support, labor, nonprofits, a fortedable housing folks. sound like we'll have a chance to answer those

san francisco. in the 1980s, the supposedly already existing war on drugs did actually ramp up. and not coincidentally, it got redefined to focus national fear and law enforcement resources on some very specific drugs. this landmark ran on the cover of "the new york times" on november 29th, 1985. "new purified form of cocaine causes alarm as abuse spreads." this front page article was seen as the broad american introduction to the kind of cocaine that was used by poor people. and crack cocaine was not covered as funny or eccentric or glamorous or fabulous. cocaine, in this form, was the scariest thing you could possibly imagine. "the times" wrote about kids getting hooked on it left and right. that it reported sexual degradation among women using crack. they said women experienced, quote, increased sexual appetite and an interest in previously untried sexual practices. the article ended this way, quote, it's almost like we're talking about a different drug here. crack, in my meaningful way, was not a different drug. it's just a cheap, concentrated version of the same cocaine that you could buy glamorous jewelry for. but the crack form of cocaine was treated very, very differently by the media and by the politicia
