at this time, officer heppler repeated san francisco police department, come out. hearing the commotion from the other side of the hallway, officer heisen and hernandez were standing. suddenly, from a door on the left side of the hallway, the suspect appeared holding a large knife in each hand. both arms were raised above his head as he pulled it down the hallway towards officers. officer eisen shot the beanbag. in an attempt to put distance between the suspect and himself, he started backing up all shouting, put it down. the suspect refused to obey the commands and quickly continue towards officer heppler with knives in each hand. the only option he had to stop the threat to him and fellow officers was to use the fire arm. officer heppler shot the suspect and save himself, the other officers, and undoubtably the suspect's sister from being stabbed. for these actions they are being awarded the silver medal of valor. congratulations. department. -- engagement with the san francisco police department. re lucky that we have one of the best of the command staff working with us right now. she manages the enforcement arm of the mta including the san francisco police officers that work and ride the buses. they are largely responsible to be how to be safe when learning how to ride on the system. >> first of all, i really want to thank director for this campaign and putting in j. resources behind it. a little bit of what we do on the mta side of the police department, everybody reports an incident and it comes to us. i read every single related report. it gets disseminated to the district station captains. they look over the constant data and they develop enforcement plans that assist our city in combating crime and incidents on me. -- on muni. we have officers dedicated solely to the mta. they ride in uniforms and plain clothes. we also have k-9 units. i can't say more, they do with our transit system. we're down 30% in crime and the transit system. as the director said, the only place wh

supervisor wiener: today, i would like to honor one of our great commanders in the san francisco police department. commander lee, can you come up? [applause] lee, who si moris more popular than any of us, retires after 31 years of service. he has played many roles in the san francisco police deparment. he is the commander in terms of transportqatioation and was the officer in charge of the homicide section, where she raised rates. she succeeded in each and every one. you may recall, several years ago, the commander was stabbed in the line of duty performing an investigation. she has been there for san francisco to keep the city safe. lee is also a real leader in the lbgt community, and it is important to look in context, when you look at the san francisco police department, there are quite a few lesbians who have been able to suceed at higher levels, including a number of the command staff level, and not as many gay men. because of hiv and aids, a lot of gay men in the department were no longer there. with so many things in the community, during the epidemic, our lesbian sisters steppe
