here in california state senator scott wiener from san francisco has authored a bill to develop overdose prevention programs through safe consumption sites in san francisco, los angeles and oakland. the programs would include access to a hygienic space supervised by trained staff, the state so a massive increase in opioid deaths during the pandemic up 70% from 2019 to 2020. we're joined by senator scott wiener. now senator appreciate your time. you have said this challenge requires an all hands on deck approach. what is your reaction to see this change in heart from the justice department? i'm i was thrilled to see this statement from the department of justice, keeping an open mind and taking a science based approach. to take consumption sites instead of the trump administration's knee jerk opposition. we have a public health emergency on our hands in san francisco, far more people died. of drug overdoses in the last couple of years and died of covid and these are all entirely preventable deaths and people have a space where they can go and use instead of using in front of people's homes and businesses on the streets. i
