san francisco families have been dreading because in just a few hours, we expect they will learn whether their neighborhood schools are on the chopping block. as san francisco unified tries to get its budget under control. san francisco unified is under scrutiny from the state and the city of san francisco for budget trouble, which is only partly related to declining enrollment. right now, the district is in a $400 million budget hole and is projected to run out of money by 2025. what we know right now is that all schools, elementary, middle and high schools are part of this discussion. the chronicle narrowed it down to about 14 of the district's 121 schools, and in a recorded video provided by the superintendent's office, the superintendent, matt wayne, announced that the list would be released today and talked about why closures and mergers are critical right now. what this means. and so last month, mayor london breed and the city sent in a stabilization team to weigh in on the district's finances. they're offering help with human resources and youth and family services representatives as well. back in may, the california department of education released their audit of the district, which was dire but did
