once i moved from the city college i moved to study my bachelor's at the san francisco state university where i'm studying now. through ethnic studies courses and through rer -- resources and empowerment center, the hardships i endure, the community organizer and caretaker and single mother. as i receive this award humbled and honored. i would like to thank my professors, friends, mentors who believe in and challenge me and who have helped me see that the struggles i have and continue to endure give me strength. paul menendez, mitchell, walker, theresa. thank you for showing me the meaning of being an aging of change through the work that you do through the work that you do and how you serve the community. i would like to thank my parents for sacrificing what they never had. to my daughter, our future leaders, thank you for being my daughters, my reason for living. i love you. thank you. san francisco. while i was in graduate school i lived in the apartment that has to be accessible in san francisco state university. so i was safe. i was an accessible room and i can get in and out with my wheelchair. however during those three 3 years i had the money saved from this settlement. i was looking really hard and working really hard with realtors who a lot of them gave up on me because it was so difficult to find an accessible home here in the city. of course my nervous were really kicking in and after 3 years i finished graduate school. i finally found a home which was a tic option on 89 sanchez street. and it was a ground level apartment. this home surprising to me was actually at the sidewalk was really where my wheelchair was and i was able to get inside the house and even see the house before i purchased it. i didn't have to make any kind of renovations or put a ramp or nothing. i was very lucky. so on that note, i just want to say that i have worked extra hard to get an education and i as a disabled person refuse to depend on the government. i wanted to be independent in every angle of life possi

my main job has been doing social work for san francisco state university. i have been a community organizer, a social worker, but i have also been a legislative aide. i worked mostly for community- based organization supporting kids and families, working for labor. i got to see how city hall could be an effective tool to create change. i looked at running in 2007, 2008, and somehow i made it. i have been in politics for so many ways, doing work around central america, supporting people in central america against u.s. imperialism, their right to live, self determination. i did a lot of work on that on campus when i was in college. a bit of work on apartheid when i was in college as well. >> i never got involved in supporting a candidate. i never thought a candidate was someone that i would support. then when tom ammiano ran against willie brown, i got inspired. i thought, someone with integrity and honesty, if they can run for mayor, maybe i can be somebody who represents what is true about our people. that is what inspired me to run and be a candidate. one
