major work needs to be done on the science building at san francisco state university. a recent report found signs of harmful materials inside. now the building is closed for the rest of the semester. brian flores is live to tell us more about the impact on the students and the staff out there. >> reporter: well, it's day one of the spring semester for faculty students and staff here at san francisco state university. in terms of the immediate impact, though, it's gonna be inconvenient as 250 faculty and teachers need to find other offices. 10,000 students who study here or have classes here, they need to find out where their classes are this morning now that the building is closed for the semester. that decision was made to close it after routine inspections. they found evidence of asbestos, mercury and peeling lead paint. according to a second inspection, it was much worse than originally thought. according to a report, asbestos was discovered in the basement of first and second floor and several areas for mercury vapors and a large concentration in the basement. a re

i got my degree in social work at san francisco state university, and while i was in school in social work school i did a lot to learn the landscape of services and programs for childrens and families in the city. i had an internship for two years as an intern. then another three years as a staff. in 1991 coalman and community groups associated coalman and children's community led the effort to establish a children's fund, a ballot measure that was put on the ballot by decision and loaded up here to the department of election in wagons that were filled with petitions signed by residents of san francisco. that passed in 1991 and again in 2000 was reauthorized and extended for 15 years. i was part of that campaign working closely with stephanie, who is now working in the da's office. and in that process i learned the landscape of how our city has benefitted from the children's fund program. it has been remarkable the ref /hraougs it has caused and how we think about children, how we care about children, how we develop young people from early age and make sure they have active and exciti

my main job has been doing social work for san francisco state university. i have been a community organizer, a social worker, but i have also been a legislative aide. i worked mostly for community- based organization supporting kids and families, working for labor. i got to see how city hall could be an effective tool to create change. i looked at running in 2007, 2008, and somehow i made it. i have been in politics for so many ways, doing work around central america, supporting people in central america against u.s. imperialism, their right to live, self determination. i did a lot of work on that on campus when i was in college. a bit of work on apartheid when i was in college as well. >> i never got involved in supporting a candidate. i never thought a candidate was someone that i would support. then when tom ammiano ran against willie brown, i got inspired. i thought, someone with integrity and honesty, if they can run for mayor, maybe i can be somebody who represents what is true about our people. that is what inspired me to run and be a candidate. one

i got my masters in public health here at san francisco state university and i have study obesity related diseases disparities. and the current policy proposals of supervisors mar and weiner reflect the best current science, with regards to the institute of medicine and the recommendation for example. about how local governments can work to reduce consumption and work to mitigate the impacts of obesity related disease. and we know that from the search the children of color are disproportionately exposed to sugary drinks advertising, and we know that san francisco is low income communities consume soda and suffering from diabetes and other obesity related disease. and the soda tax policies, proposed, charging a fee for the distribution of this, and using the dollars to increase the access to healthy food, public drinking water, and improving the parks and providing other physical activity opportunities and so, i ask you to support these policies tonight, for the health of san francisco's children. and san francisco's families thank you very much. >> >> good evening, my name is todd david a
