san francisco state. just to give you a brief overview, i know not a lot of you knew paul and worked with paul. he was in this room many times. and the longmore institute of san francisco state universitykind of a -- it brings together advocacy, academics, culture, and the whole point of it is to get people in conversation that might not otherwise be in conversation and to change attitudes about disability. so, through cultural initiatives, through academic programs, through basically changing people's minds. and the idea here is that you take something like culture and you get people to think about disability as a form of experience on a par with race, gender, social class, all the things we care about. if you can get people to think about disability differently and disabled people differently, then they will change their attitudes about employment, employing people with disabilities, or with service provision, all of these things. so, all of our programs with designed to do that, kind of that work. and we're eager, we're delighted to be here and hopefully working through some good partnerships with the mayor's council on disability and with other groups in the city. just briefly, a c

the school piece. 10 years ago when the state was ready to possible pass legislation to support a universal preschool and i remember the discussion in san francisco as well why do we need to put this in the p fund when the state is going to fund everything. and myself and others argue that, you know, something the state also tries to do something and until they actually do something we can't depend on their passage we need to look at the 4-year-old so people in the public have already acknowledged the benefits of preschool at the 4-year-old age at the time. so again, when you look at the education gap of who's not succeeding and not succeeding we have the preschool gap many of the low income families with their 4 and 5 years old were not having that experience. so incorporated it happens there's been more research and more education that's been done and, yes the 4-year-old is really important to have they're one year of preschool but if you have 2 years of preschool experience you've till coming into kindergartener better. everybody knows about the brain research the bulk of the development gets he developed with the foundation of zero to 5 yvmgz

san francisco is 17 minutes and in san jose, 280, away from 17, empty out there with no problems through san jose at this hour. >>> breaking overnight, at least one person is injured after san jose state university students make a harrowing escape from an harm building -- an apartment building fire. matt? >> this was a close call. you can see the damage from the fire at this apartment complex a block away from san jose state. firefighters believe a match started it and a cell phone saved the life of a young man. here is cell phone video showing the flames. it started at 11:30 on east williams and south eighth street and they were told a young man in a third floor apartment lit a candle and tossed the match on to a couch. he walked outside and saw the couch on fire and used the cell phone to call the room hate to get out and he ran through the flames to escape and a neighbor explained what he saw. >> i saw a big fire, and i knew it wasn't good. i didn't know what would happen after that. >> the roommate escaped but he was taken to the hospital with second-degree buns and a second person was treated for smoke. three units were affected and 11 people were displaced and they will be straying with fr
