san francisco, ktvu news. >>> certainly, an unusual twist in the race for san francisco mayor. for more on all of this, we are joined by david mcewen, political science professor at sonoma state university. good afternoon and thanks for taking the time. we obviously see these two candidates, mark leno and jane kim, looking to take advantage of the ranked choice voting system. how effective do you think the strategy will be? >> having a novel strategy where you come out of the gates and try to name your prospective employment, -- opponent, but also kind of buoy up. this could pay dividends. this rank torts system, we have seen this in operation in oakland, we've seen it in other operations across the country. what it can do is raise the profile. the risk that each candidate runs is whether or not they are negative, that way they are positive. but somebody like mark leno who has been around the city for so long, someone like jane kim who aligned herself with bernie sanders' folks in running for state senate not long ago, this brings a major team together. it's an important development for the future of san francisco politics, and for the next mayor because that person could potentially af
