san francisco opera. i am here to represent a group of us from arts organizations. eight are here today. san francisco ballet, san francisco performances, san francisco jazz, odc dance, san francisco film society, san francisco symphony, and san francisco opera. we are also joined by members of the sentences for unified school district visualize performing arts office. we represent over 200 grantees. we ask that you please protect the proposed budget for the arts. everyone need to sacrifice, but the arts community has taken a disproportionately significant cut in the past. we ask to stop being unfair to the arts. we have done the best we can to cut our budgets and be creative in ways to generate revenue in this very difficult economic time. more cuts to our funding would result in cutbacks on staff and a reducing programming. please nknow, our 200 members, e benefit san francisco in many ways, including educational programming to tens of thousands of schoolchildren. almost every public school in the city receives programming with us. the programs are with children who need it the most. they tend to be the more low income, disadvantage, and emotionally-scarred youth. we have ways to reach them and give them a chance t

[applause] >> as the city of san francisco has grown, there are a number of cultural organizations that have grown with it. the san francisco symphony, the ballet, and ensure we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the san francisco museum of modern art's. one of the things many of our viewers may not understand about museums is the way they grow and evolve is really about a broad. his patient and support from many individuals who give their collections -- and broad support from many individuals who give their collections to the museum. this year it will be celebrating and abolishing those individuals through exhibition -- and acknowledging those individuals throughout asia. joining me is janet bishop, the curator. i understand you have been with the museum quite a number of years. you remember its original home on van ness. now you are part of that transition to the center, the civic center, and of course your museum has been really the anchor of cultural tenants that has helped us transform this area of the city. >> to my mind, it is wonderful to be part of such a rich cultural community. when visitors come to this area, that h

in san francisco and the bay area, we represent areas, various regional and metropolitan symphony andpera organizations, major regional theaters, sky walker ranch, recording film scores, and games. celebrity shows that come through our large venues and more. musicians whose livelihoods come from working in the many restaurants, clubs and cafes throughout the city. these are extraordinarily hard timeses for musicians. we hear of orchestras filing for bankruptcy because giving has been drastically cut for the arts. government support is virtually nonexistent and shrinking court and -- corporate and individual give something not giving up with the cost of doing business. what we don't hear about is the plight of the last cat gore of musicians for whom we advocate. the club musicians on count on the availability of venues to piece together a living. what they give to our community with their music is immeasurerable enriching our lives and culture on a daily basis. in return the vast majority of these musicians live at a subsistence level. what they need is your help for attaining decent w
