the proposal has split opinions among san francisco's tech names. now is a supporter of prop c. >> thanks for inviting me. emily: you split with them some of your tech peers. you split with the mayor of san francisco. why are you so out front on this? >> just walked outside the door here. we have a very serious homeless crisis in san francisco. it is getting much worse. we have 1200 homeless families each with two kids. how are we going to get them off the streets? it is getting worse. it is a problem. we know it. that is why i am voting for prop c. emily: what about the unfairness others are citing? jack dorsey says there is an unfairness i see as my role at square. companies like square would be taxed at a significantly larger total contribution then much larger companies like salesforce. >> what i see is a crisis of inequality in san francisco. that is what is striking to me. we have 70 billionaires in our city. that is incredible. we have companies with hundreds of billions of dollars in market cap. salesforce, we are the largest employer in san

for those of you that are not aware, we are san francisco's tech advocacy organization here in town. so, there's been a lot of really great points covered today by a number of our members and their workers, and i'd like to kind of cover a little bit more of a larger ecosystem. i, fortunately, as the industry representative, am able to take a look at many different companies and really get a feel for the impact of this legislation. so we represent tech companies both big and small. many of the companies that are here in the room today. we have been able to gather some data that's, you know, quite significant. there is hundreds of jobs so far that we have identified that would be at risk with this legislation. these are really good jobs, as we've covered already today. some of our employers are paying on average 30% more than the market. we also have really good opportunities through these jobs for people to be upskilling and breaking into the tech industry. many of these different employers have great programs for employees that start in the kitchen to move on up to other departments.

argue in my book and i laid out because the people who are fighting to get more housing in san francisco are techhey themselves come out of Ãb come to their jobs owing $100,000 in student debt and paying $3500 a month for a one bedroom in san francisco, $3000 Ã$3500 for a one-bedroom. these folks feel like, and making all this money 80 grand out of college working at facebook but it's going into my student debt and the rent and i don't have anything. i don't have a future in this city and the sweet build more housing and have more affordability.the tech workers are part of the solution. tech companies don't build housing. silicon valley allowed all these jobs to be created both in the 90s and it sits, the cupertino city council won't require apple to build housing so apple adds 10,000 jobs to cupertino and where are those people going to live? san francisco, there you live in daly city a small town next door it's not hip place. tech workers are moving in becoming part of the solution and temper the scope it should be blamed as they often are. i discuss in the book how documentary there is no blam

in its not just privacy a very very concrete example is the so-called homeless tax in san francisco so for years techcompanies in san francisco have profited from pretty major tax cuts and bringing in well paid employees has driven up housing prices but that's left a lot of people behind a lot of homeless in the city and now the city can no longer ignore this with voters just having decided that every company over fifteen million annual revenue will have to pay a tax that is then put into homeless shelters and affordable housing all right so listen excess comes responsibility the e.u. is now working on a digital service tax something that the u.s. certainly isn't very keen on but everyone else is on the same page. well this is not a done deal yet of course here also the idea is to tax revenue where it is made and not work companies are headquartered however some of the headquarters here in europe are in ireland and in luxembourg for example and these these countries are not so keen on that tax either because they would probably lose alec in tax revenues others specifically in the nordic countries are

two san francisco tech billionaires are sparring on twitter over a proposal on the ballot tomorrow, proposition would tax san francisco companies. >>> taking a look out on the water this morning at richardson bay, you can see half a dozen vessels anchored out in the middle of the bay and stay there. under city law they're not supposed to anchor out for more than 72 hours at a time. some of the boats have been out here for months. the san francisco chronicle is reporting over the weekend dozen anchored out boats were tagged by police with orange warning stickers letting the voters know they're illegally anchored boats removed soon. it's an issue sausalito has debated over for years. mariners say they're frustrated because they use the restrooms and dump trash and waste water in the bay. boaters who anchor out say the open river say public water way and they have a right to be out there. one man has lived on his boat for seven years and says increasing enforcement by police is a good thing. >> i do, i think it's gotten a little bit out of hand. i don't think it should be eliminated. it's been abl

prop c passing last night in san francisco and really going to be more taxes for large companies in san francisco, specifically those techpanies. so it will affect the tech sectors. going to start at the beginning of next year on january 1st. now, for folks that aren't familiar with this, talk about prop c, this homeless tax, as it's been dubbed. it means a tax for large companies in san francisco of more than $50 million annually, about one-half of 1%. so if you're a company making more than $100 million, you're going to pay roughly about $500,000 more in taxes. now, this did divide tech ceos in san francisco. sales force,{s:c}eo mark benihoff supporting it, donated millions of dollars to the prop c campaign but twitter ceo jack dorsey was against it, saying it will deter tech companies from coming to the city of san francisco. of course there were campaign supporters at last night's rally that are happy with these results. >> homeless people have a lot of home they haven't had before that we were' able to turn this around. >> reporter: now that tax will generate roughly about $300 million, and it's expected to provide

employees in dublin, london, new york, and the heart of the tech sector, san francisco, on your screen right now, thousands of people pouring out of google offices around the globe. an employee walkout happening around the world, tripped off at around 11:00 a.m. local time. i would assume local time is eastern? eastern time. workers saying they are protesting their employer's mishandling of c-suite sexual misconduct allegations, specifically. google is calling it a walkout fw for real change after a report detailed sexual misconduct allegations against software creator andy ruben and other executives. that was bad enough but google reportedly paid ruben a $90 million severance package, this was back in 2014, despite finding the allegations against him credible. he blasted the "new york times" report denying the galallegatio. it is unclear what protesters expect the walkout to accomplish but they have influenced management's decision making process before. the stock is down about half a percent. you know the workers complained about bidding on a $10 billion pentagon cloud computing cont

emily: what does it mean going for the tech economy like seattle and san francisco were the market hasing? do those markets stay up go flat or do you see a pronounced dip? >> those are the markets that are most volatile. some of it is influence by the stock market. there has been a correction there. we've given him some of the gains we saw earlier on the year. people in san francisco and seattle are using their stock to pay for a house. you cannot do it just with your salary. the fact that those markets are starting to cool is probably good news for tech employers. many of us have worried we would have to open an office in virginia or montana or who knows where to be able to pay the rent. so our employees could have a good life and start a family. and still work for us for a reasonable wage. i think the fact that some of these coastal cities are cooling in the real estate prices is good news for all of the businesses who are based in those cities. it is a long needed correction. emily: i have to ask you about proposition c. the very controversial ballot measure in san francisco where t
