conversation going that we cannot use the excuse that just because we are trying to end piracy that we curtail innovation. coming from san francisco, it means a lot to the city. i took advantage of our staff. i went to the president of the u.s. conference of mayors and said, "since we are innovating in san francisco, why not allow us an audience with the rest of the mayors across the country? could we create a task force?" they said absolutely. i get to head the task force for the u.s. congress of mayors. when you innovate, and i talk to you about what you are doing, and get to present those on an annual basis to the rest of the mayors. if you are going to win tonight, that is the list i am going to start working from. i will then give you a national audience, so that if, by chance, your innovation would not only have the attraction of san francisco, but might have the attraction of several other mayors, the great merits of all the other cities -- that is the first, and i will be excited to introduce that on a daily basis, when we start the first task force with the u.s. conference of mayors. we are already working on this year. i want to tonight announce an

the cities. this year, the san francisco manila sister city committee represents -- celebrates its 50 year, marking five decades of service to our people. the san francisco bay area filipino american community salutes this milestone, a legacy of goodwill and true filipino american pride. >> representing the san francisco manila sister city committee, are defective chairman -- our de facto chairman. [applause] >> if i may, i'd like to call up some very key members of the committee. i cannot call all 100-plus people up here, but some very key members. first filipino elected in san francisco, who has been with the sister city committee from day one, and partners in making sure that the cultural links have to do with education. nancy and dan harrington, please join us here. they have sent 13 million books to impoverished children over the years. we thank you all for this honor. we have enjoyed tremendously the ability to link with the philippines. we have generated thousands of jobs, both in the philippines and in san francisco. we have donated thousands of dollars to various events, such as the cleanu

the economy of san francisco. ouster -- our support for code for america, another nonprofit, to go into the city of san francisco, fined projects like david chiu just talked about, projects that volunteer hackers from the tech community can go in and solve problems for the city of san francisco, to eradicate bureaucracy. applying for a business license in san francisco is not a pleasant experience. we need to apply technology to problems like that. >> [inaudible] >> initially, it is about the economy and jobs. many of us in s.f. citi are very active already philanthropic way. the mayor keeps talking about the philanthropic efforts. funny enough, i am tied to ask him what is in his mind. we have not discussed that yet because we are focused on jobs. thank you. >> [inaudible] >> sopa is a bill in the congress. there is a bill called pipa in the senate. the moniker for the bill in the house is sopa. these bills are tantamount to censorship on the internet. i was with ari emanuel, probably the most famous agent in the country, mark andriessen, in southern california, and we talked about this. mark had the most concise

in san francisco, like other cities, they have a department of the environment. they do not have this in every city. san francisco is a forward- thinking city. with that, i want to bring up the director of the department, melanie nutter. >> good morning. i am so pleased to be here today to celebrate this environmental milestone. as you have heard, we would not be here today without the broad coalition of support and the ongoing collaboration that came together around ensuring we could reduce carbon emissions from our taxi fleet coming here in san francisco. the san francisco department of the environment is proud to have been a partner in insuring san francisco's taxi fleet is the greenest in the nation. first, on the policy front, in 2007, 2008, our department staff work with the taxi commission and cab companies to create the green tax ordinance. this collaboration resulted in a performance standard, requiring taxi companies achieve over all the emission reductions each year without mandating specific models. as long as each company's fleet met the required perf

from walk san francisco, the san francisco coalition, members of the local 261 who work hard with us from getting the bond pas sed, san francisco capital planning committee, the office of the city administrator, norman kelly is here, the mayor's office of public finance, the mayor's office of disability, the san francisco planning department, others and all the staff, the public utilities commission. we have been working hard with them to make sure that we support all of the projects and that we will be ready to implement. we're here today to launch the bond program that will make a significant -- that will make significant repairs to our streets and build new streetscapes for many neighborhoods. last week, the board of supervisors unanimously approved the sale of the first round of bonds. we're very happy about that. we're getting ready to start work. i will ask our mayor to come up and say a few words. mayor ed lee. [applause] >> walk s.f. is eager to see new investment in wider sidewalks and smarter street design throughout the city. in san francisco, even though we all walk, we still see 800 people here get hit by cars. that is too much. thanks to the mayor's pedestrian safety task force, we know that only 7% of our streets are where over half of all of the serious and fatal injuries occur. that means we know where to focus our resources to save lives. smart investment will pay off for everyone in the city because more walkable streets means more foot traffic. that is better for local businesses. that means safer streets for kids to walk to schools, families to walk to parks, and for everyone to enjoy lives, works, and visits san francisco. thank you. the city and county of san francisco has been celebrating this for seven years. we're fortunate to have partnered with the office of the mayor for the last five years to honor the contributions of filipino-americans to the united states through all of these decades. when we started, we thought we were just broadcasting television content to global filipinos. but who are these filipinos? we have had the privilege an opportunity to know these filipinos all over the world. north america, the middle east, europe, asia, even africa. the 9 million overseas filipinos are a diverse bunch. migrant workers, young and old, first generation adventuress or their children and grandchildren. despite many differences in their work and their educational background or lifestyles or in their country of residence, the global filipino is much the same. he is taken each -- conscientious worker, an opportunity-seeker, a courageous risk-taker willing to sacrifice for better future for their family. she is resilient and assimilates to the foreign land immediately. but in her heart, she ch

i moved here for many of the reasons that i think we're all here in san francisco. we're a citycompehensive immigration refoimmigrants. we know that san francisco was built on the backs of immigrant labor. we also know that for the past 10 years on so, it has been fairly dark nationwide for our immigrant community. we've had a new record number of rates belief had a tremendous backlog of applications of legal immigrants that are trying to become citizens. there have been countless stories of constitutional and civil rights violated of many of our family members and friends. i used to be an immigrant rights attorney. i can tell you firsthand that i would visit the ins detention center and see individuals who had been beaten by ice agents. this conversation cannot be more timely and more important with the new administration and a new recognition and importance of building an immigrants rights movement. hopefully we will soon get healthcare reform behind us. hopefully the next question that our nation grapples with is how do we tell you the constitutional and civil rights that all

the man who leads your san francisco giants, and your biggest fan, mr. larry bvaer -- baer. >>thanks renel. tony's recording is a huge part of not just the cityan francisco giants tradition. since we have been in the new ball park, it has been played a total of 573 times after giants wins, including playoff wins and including world series wins. [applause] importantly, you know, we almost lost the giants. in 1993, we made some desperate calls to tony when the team was saved, and we asked tony -- there is only one person that could kick off the new generation, the new era of giants baseball on opening day in 1993, and that was tony bennett. he sang "god bless america" and "i left my heart in san francisco" on that date. it was an unbelievable day. it brought down the house, as did your performance at the all- star game. as did your performance at the world series. you are a huge part of the san francisco giants. as we all know, you have not arrived until you have your own bobblehead. i recognize household in the san francisco model, especially the 80% to 120% or leaving the city, we need to do something about it. i've directed the office of housing to collect new ideas, creating housing for the san francisco middle and take nothing of the table initially. we are at the beginning of a housing trust fund discussions and working group process. i look forward to working through these ideas as they come up. while i have spent my mott response talking about housing for the san francisco medal, i do not want to lose sight of housing for the most needy. while we have had a incredibly successful program up to this point, we face an unprecedented crisis with the dissolution of redevelopment. redevelopment has been responsible for creating the majority of our affordable housing and now that the city needs to take on that responsibility, that responsibility extends to all the 100% from the very bottom to the very top. thank you.
