she began her career at the san francisco unified school district at 1949 as a school district. -- as a schoolteacher. she was an assistant principal and a principal. she was one of three african- american educators and the only female during this time to become an administrator. she inspired her students, parted with parents, and supportive teachers and staff to ensure that all children received an equitable education and through the time when our nation struggled to provide much. she and her family dedicated over 50 years to the school district. she served -- attorneys serve as an assistant superintendent was an exemplary teacher and principal and a tireless leader on educational issues. whereas the staff, parents, and community have followed the process in naming school buildings and have garnered widespread support to change the name of the burnett cdc after an american whose life work has benefited all of the students of the center regardless of their racial and ethnic backgrounds, educational capabilities. it is resolved that we honor leoloa havard by renaming the burnett child

i am a transplant for the san francisco unified school district. this is all of 40 years. from my association with her at the third baptist church of san francisco, i have seen her in many roles. she is an outstanding educator, her administrator, and a woman of integrity. what an honor is -- we encourage you to vote on her behalf. i have been active member for 40 years. and tonight, i come in support of the naming of the education -- i represent more than 600 women of the third baptist women's ministry. for many years, i have sat in the proverbial crow's-nest, and observed the many glass ceilings that have been crashed in by this pattern. she is a brilliant, intelligent and audacious servant with education as her highest priority. tonight, i asked you to take the bold step of naming the early education center. create a living legacy, create a living history. yet to be sure that our children will be remembering this night has won the where is following will think of the textbook that they will read as the woman that was a dreamer, a

plans for expansion in san francisco including an improved scores to get our folks will prepare for college. we look forward to the support and partnership of san francisco unified. >> and the program director for the urban debate lead. i am just going to say in my brief time here, i have seen the results that this league has done. there are several students that have been accepted to colleges all around the country, and they definitely hone their skills through the monthly workshop into the tournament. i also wanted to give a special thank you. >> i have wonderful students here with me, and i am a product of debate myself. it was one of the most influential experiences of my life. i realized we had an incredible wealth of untapped talent. i wanted to get really involved in this incredible program. i really look forward to continuing this relationship. with that, i would like to invite a couple of my fabulous debaters. >> i am a senior at the school for equity. it is a school that does not get enough recognition being that it is a small school. but we focus on social change and equality for minorities. one thing that debate has done for me is put me in college.

the principal center is not even listed at the san francisco unified web site. there is no school accountability report card posted her any other data. i am disturbed by the lack of transparency that has characterized this new use of schools. much more consultation is needed before san francisco unified make the mistake that we all requests. >> my name is often via smith, and i am here to ask the board to reconsider the decision to change what was let go the honda grammar school, my grammar school to a principle high school. we hear the budget shortfall, and we see that this principle high-school will be three times as expensive as any other high school. the inner sunset has endured the use of the school property and by newcomers and gateway high school. the neighbors that had increased graffiti, trash, and other problems with the students. we are now told that a principal school is a done deal with no input from the neighborhoods. we are given the statistics of the current school relocated at forty third. we are told the students are at risk. we are an easy 15

the union has urged san francisco unified school district to provide access to these services through the school district for many years. we hope that we can begin to reduce this huge outlay of money and provide these services to our students internally, within the san francisco unified school district. thank you. president mendoza: thank you. >> commissioners of the board of education, superintendent carlos garcia in the pink shirt -- [laughter] i rise to speak to you about two items. they are on page 32, item 3k. the item there is remarkable and commendable because the school district, through the decision not to modernize one campus and to have the contractor hurry the work at another campus to save -- has saved $50,000. that goes back into the bond fund and can be used for other projects. when you see that, it makes you worry about what is being done with some of the other bond expenditures, such as the one across the street. the incredible work that is planned for the john your campus -- john muir campus in order to create some administrative offices, when presumably, if you look

the 4 were the mtap with muni, the youth services with san francisco police department and the security guards through the san francisco unified school district and d.c. yf. we rolled out responsibilities and it was within the scope of work we were doing and to form what that looked like. they are going to be the primary lead but have support of m tap to deal with interventions outside the perimeter the school. and the police department was a supportive roll if it escalated. previous to this, there had been incidences almost riots at different schools. lots of arrests and last year there were minimal, if none. >> this was last summer? this was the first time you had this in place. >> what did you do? were the teams on the campuses when school let out? >> yes. there were level assignments where there were reps from those 4 entities. they checked in and talked about what that particular day brought. >> that's going to happen again this summer. >> i want a concrete example where this worked where you went in and diffused. concrete example. >> at burton last year, in the first week of summer school. there was a gun related alterca
