from sparks san francisco public schools, and from google to support them in their future learning endeavours after graduation. april is lgbt q. pride celebration month for san francisco unified. aligned with our mission, every day we provide each and every student the quality instruction and equitable support required to thrive in the 21st century, and in april, we celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning community to improve school climate and create safer schools , and promote respect for all members of school communities. this past wednesday, april 3rd , our school health program , lgbt q. support services hosted its sixth annual high sku -- high school g.s.a. stone wall, the next 50 years of resistance. over 130 students from 17 schools participated. the davis plant in partnership with the queer and trans advisory -- council. a group of seven high school youth leaders from across the district. g.s.a. day was supported by ten community partners, and a robust team of volunteers from school health programs, and pupil services. students participated in 12 different workshops, on topics ranging from trans history, art as empowerment, drag as activism

i am also a product of the san francisco unified school district. i went to andrew jackson elementary school. i went to cabrillo elementary school. and you wonder why so many elementary schools. we had a retrofit for earthquakes. i graduated from washington high school in the late 80's. i went to roosevelt elementary school, and i'm very thankful i had the opportunity at roosevelt to be in band. it didn't allow me to take the visual arts because that was my elective, but that stayed with me until now. i'm a musician now, but i'm a visual artist because i worked very hard after barely graduating from washington high school, okay? i'm telling you that i know it from the inside out. i worked hard at city college, 13th grade, to get myself into a four-year college, and that's where i realized no, you're an artist, and i graduated from the studio art department, came back, and was given the opportunity by my mean of students. so it takes advocates for the students. that's what i'm being right now. so i want you guys to reconsider this because i'm doing t

so i just want to note, in this neighborhood, creative arts is also surrounded by two other san francisco unified schools that are also doing very well with their student population. jonah me or elementary, and cobb elementary. in terms of looking at the student population, when we're talking about diversity, we talk about english learners and the percentage of students that are represented there. we also talk about race, we also want to look at foster youth, homeless youth, migrant youth, and obviously, students with disabilities and socioeconomically disadvantaged students. when i look, creative arts, i see no foster youth, i see note homeless youth, know what migrant students, and in the surrounding schools, there are 35 students that have been identified as homeless out of a population of 243. when i look at cobb elementary school, i see a population of 13 homeless youth in an entire school of 126. so those are populations that are obviously a very high needs, and they require a lot of resources and support, and -- what i am seeing in our city, and this even happens within the public schools,

san francisco since 1957. i live in this area for 42 years. my name is shirley jackson, and i am a retirement teacher for san francisco unified school district, and i work with early childhood education and after school programs. i have light upstairs and down stairs. it's been remodelled and i like it. some of my floors upstairs was there from the time i built the place, so they were very horrible and dark. but we've got lighting. the room seems lighter. they painted the place, they cemented my back yard, so i won't be worried about landscaping too much. we have central heating, and i like the new countertops they put in. up to date -- oh, and we have venetian blinds. we never had venetian blinds before, and it's just cozy for me. it meant a lot to me because i didn't drive, and i wanted to be in the area where i can do my shopping, go to work, take the kids to school. i like the way they introduced the move-in. i went to quite a bit of the meetings. they showed us blueprints of the materials that they were going to use in here, and they gave us the opportunity to choose where we would like to stay while they was renovating. it means a lot.
