i am also a mother of a 6-year-old attending kindergarten in the san francisco unified school district. my son is half chinese and half arab and i want to say today that racial discrimination in our society and in our schools is very real. i dealt with it growing up in schools. his father dealt with it growing up as an arab american and we fear our son will deal with these issues as he grows older. in addition to that, i want to say that mental health issues in our children are very real. my son, after experiencing a traumatic life event, was diagnosed with adjustment disorder. he woke up in the nights for months screaming, waking up from nightmares. the healing process was a long road. he has finally been able to heal and gain a sense of belonging, but i want to say that we need some investments in our school, invest in racially, culturally inclusive schools that are supportive and address mental health needs of children and families to give our students and families a chance to succeed. thank you. there have been several ways over the past that private philanthropy have come into san francisco unified to support specific efforts. spark began after the district did a comprehensive visioning process with the community. that visioning process asked the question, what do our students need from their education? what does sfusd need to look like to make that happen? part of that visioning process, we looked at the major shifts that would need to happen in order to arrive at our vision 2025. one of those big shifts is to align our investments. so that is a big task both to align all of the investments that are public resources but also to really align our private and philanthropic resources because we know that the public resources alone are not enough to get to where we need to be for our vision. so i also wanted to note that we do have the majority of our philanthropy is coming through spark, but there are other ways that private philanthropy comes into the district. that includes certain departments that have long-standing relationships or pursue relationships with private philanthropy

san francisco since 1957. i live in this area for 42 years. my name is shirley jackson, and i am a retirement teacher for san francisco unified school district, i work with early childhood education and after school programs. i have light upstairs and down stairs. it's been remodelled and i like it. some of my floors upstairs was there from the time i built the place, so they were very horrible and dark. but we've got lighting. the room seems lighter. they painted the place, they cemented my back yard, so i won't be worried about landscaping too much. we have central heating, and i like the new countertops they put in. up to date -- oh, and we have venetian blinds. we never had venetian blinds before, and it's just cozy for me. it meant a lot to me because i didn't drive, and i wanted to be in the area where i can do my shopping, go to work, take the kids to school. i like the way they introduced the move-in. i went to quite a bit of the meetings. they showed us blueprints of the materials that they were going to use in here, and they gave us the opportunity to choose where we would like to stay while they was renovating. it means a lot. it's

through the utility sector, and we are collaborating with them through their work with the san francisco unified school district. we knew that they would be a great organization for our department. by working together with the city college of san francisco and local 1414 and the machinist union, we establish the automotive technician pre apprenticeship program. this training before the training provides an avenue for participants to brush up on the math and reading skills with city college, develop their soft skills, and then get paid to complete on-the-job training. by the end of the program, we are ready to take -- they are ready to take the test become an sfmta apprentice. this apprenticeship program attracts me because i always liked to fix stuff and i always wanted to be a mechanic. >> i have been trying to find my path in life, and i always love to work with my hands. additionally do you think we need more female mechanics. >> i would not have done it alone to do math and score an a+ i would not have done that without this school. >> my future is already different because of this program.
