the san francisco zoo's missing lemur has been found. maki is back home after getting a much-needed checkup and some rest. he was found at a school in daly city hanging out by himself. kate larsen spoke with the little boy who was the first to spot him. >> the parents were calling and saying there's a lemur out on the playground. >> reporter: that was not how miss sarah thought she would end her day in daly city. the san francisco zoo's missing lemur maki was out on the yard. >> he was hopping around the play structures, ultimately while he was waiting to be picked up was hiding in one of the plastic play houses. >> it's exciting. >> reporter: according to his parents it was 5-year-old james trin who spotted maki first when his mom picked him up from school. >> what did the lemur look like? >> lemur. white, black and gray. >> reporter: james knew what to do with a wild animal on the loose. >> call the zookeeper. >> reporter: so it was, animal care and control and daly city police showed up and took maki into custody. maki was discovered

kate larson joins us live from the san francisco zoo where maki is home. how is he doing tonight? >> reporter: dion, i am told by zoo officials that maki is a little agitated. he is back on his arthritis medications. all things considered, he's doing great. just like any other day, 5-year-old james was leaving school with his mom when everything changed right here. james spotted a wild animal in the parking lot, and called over his friends, who were astonished to see a -- >> lemur! >> reporter: james, braden, adrian, samuel and sophie all students explained what happened next. >> then the lemur jumped over the cage and he just come inside. he was there. >> and then they called police animal control. >> reporter: cell phone video taken thursday shows him wandering around the yard. eventually the endangered primate found comfort in this playhouse. >> what was he doing in there, james? >> hiding. >> reporter: animal control and daly city police showed up and fortunately they had snacks for maki who at 21 is very old in lemur years and requires constant feedings. >> what did they give

the animal now back at home at the san francisco zoo. y's" cierra johnson, they still don't know who took it, crierra. >> reporter: the lemur is back home at the san francisco zoo. police don't know who or what individual or person was responsible for breaking into the zoo in the overnight hours into wednesday. that lemur was found at a preschool in daly city after a parent picking up their child heard one of the kids yell lemur. it was at that point -- or saw it eating in a bush. they called police as well as animal control. they both called the san francisco zoo to pick up the lemur. take a listen to what he had to say about the whole ordeal during afternoon pickup. >> i adidn't anticipate it woul show up outside of the school. if you think about it, it's pretty close. >> reporter: and that lemur was found about five miles away from the zoo. so it's pretty far. again, the person behind this lemur theft is still unknown. if anyone knows anything or has heard anything you are urged to contact police. back at the zoo so good news there. we
