we still have no idea whether or not it's going to go one way or the other. >> reporter: san fransisco fire officials say while they wear protective clothing these burns are from steam not fire. >> it any water they got on them instantly turned to steam and you do get those underneath your clothes. we try to minimise that but you want do that and that's one of the things that protective equipment doesn't protect is getting thermal burns inside. it does protect you from the flame but not the steam. >> reporter: in the meantime, fire officials say a three prong investigation is underway. a homicide investigation by the san fransisco police department, an arson investigation by the city's fire marshal, and a safety investigation. >> we're trying to find out exactly what happened, what was the course of events that caused that single event to happen, that caused these injuries and this unfortunate line of duty death. >> reporter: fire officials do estimate that when the firefighters were in the hallway of that home, temperatures ranged from 500 to 700 degrees. >>> and we are hearing for th
