[music] i am a immigrant to san francisco. my family came when i was 12 from el salvador during the civil war. this place gave us security, safety and an opportunity to thrive, so i love the city deeply, and as a mother of three kids who have grown up as city kids, i'm grateful for everything the city has to offer for people like me and families. i have been politically involved my whole life, either in government or a non profit worker and i care about the community. i care about people around me, and i want to make sure that as the world changes around us, other people have the opportunity that my family did. >> we are back in san francisco post pandemic. so important to be out supporting our businesses, supporting our neighbors. >> i'm the first woman to represent the district, believe it or not. i'm the first latina elected to the board of supervisors without an appointment first ever, so i do think that (indiscernible) i want immigrants to be represented, women, moms, people that have different experiences because that bri

francisco 130 recruit class, and i became a san francisco firefighter. i feel absolutely amazing. i thought about how i feel graduating, but feeling it is crazy. i'm so so excited to get started. i will be in station 9 in the bayview. industrial part of the city and i'm extremely excited to do everything the truck does. learn how to raise and lower the aerial. get to all the different ladders and practice them in real life and apply them to situations that we are seen in the academy, but to see them in real life will be a brand new thing. [applause] >> going up to the stage to get my badge, i was thinking about how sweaty my hands were. i was trying not to trip, and but in realty i was just thinking about how special the moment it was, and to be honest, it felt like everything stood still for a second, and it was a special time to reflect on the journey. i feel proud of my class mates making to graduation. i feel a lot of love towards my classmates and lot of respect and admuration towards the instructors. it feels good to be at this point after 21 weeks

my dad was a custodian with san francisco school district and mom a muni driver. when i grew up in san francisco i never thought of the fire service as a career. not because i didn't want to be a firefighter, i just didn't know anything about it and it was literally the experience of trying to figure what i was going to do with the next part of my life where i decided to go to city college and take a couple classes. that is when i discovered there was actually a fire science program program emt program and paramedic program. if it wasn't for that opportunity to get the education training and meet several mentors that are some of my grood friends today, i don't think i ever would are have pursued this career. i was interested in becoming a paramedic so i did work experience at the ems division when it was actually in the presidio, completed that program, did my paramedic internship at the same time i volunteered with san francisco fire reserve and able to learn a lot of hands on skills associated with becoming a firefighter. san francisco went through a period of 7 years

i'm chanel joyce i'm a firefighter for the san francisco fire department. ie station 4. in the mission bay districtism lived in san francisco in noe valley. grew up with my mom and i went to high school in san ma te'o. after high school i went to mississippi where i played volleyball in university of southern mississippi. what got me going after college was i was applying to place related to fire and police i loved my experience but my family is home. i grew up here and could not be far from my family anymore i came back. >> i have been a firefighter for 4 years the transition to the fire department has been seam tells is the same. team work and coming together. transitioning to the job med me comfortable that i made the right decision to come become and work for a fire department that is big in diversity and equality and becoming a fell. i got to be a member at a few different fire stations. each station has their own culture. i worked in places that are xroem and with a young crew and had the most seniority have 3 or 2 years in whatever it may be. learning

i can relate to. my project is i'm highlighting 6 trailblazers who's family was tied to san francisco. they all have different forms of art expression. but i noticed through the research that there is a common that connects them all, which is this desire to live life authentically, organickly, speak of the love that they believe in. i made it art students and learning about art history and the place in art with the context of learning about their predecessors. >> sinsawa is synonymous of san francisco. there is a school named after her. >> wasn't she also in stamp? her art was in 2020. >> do you think she would become a artist? >> hmm, i think she was like 100s of other in the city that love the art. when there is no audience or income, why do we still make art? >> well because we seek to know ourselves and one has to believe like alela, we make art for a lifetime not just a career. i think for some, artist like breathing, it's how we know we're alive. >> it's so incredible to do this project and do the experience that connects generation, the full experience of being artist. >> comics

i came to san francisco when i was five years old. the first time i rode a cable car and i went to see a christmas tree and we rode the cable car with the christmas worker and that was the first time i rode the cable car and didn't ride again until i worked here. i was in the medical field for a while and i wanted a change. some people don't do that but i started with the mta of september of 1999 and came over to cable car in 2008. it was a general sign up and that's when you can go to different divisions and i signed up as a conductor and came over here and been here since. there were a few ladies that were over at woods that wanted to come over here and we had decided we wanted to leave woods and come to a different division and cable car was it. i do know there has been only four women that work the cable car in the 150 years and i am the second person to represent the cable car and i also know that during the 19, i think 60s and women were not even allowed to ride on the side of a cable car so it's exciting to know you can go from

i raised my kids in san francisco and work in san francisco. i'm a second generation irish american. i come to speak about the symbol of our cultural heritage. the center is more then a building, it is living legacy intertwining past and present with the irish american community. my family story began with immigrant dream. my grandparents helen and jim fitzpatrick immigrated from ireland. they were charter members of the current center where they found piece of ireland for themselves and many do today. as was their vision, the center is beacon of hope and cultural home in a new land. my husband immigrated from island in the 90's. the center was a place to meet people, look for work and build his community of family and friends. i have fond memories going to the center for dinners concert and cultural events. my children had the same experience even competing in irish dance competitions. the cultural center has been a sanctuary during war and peace and stands not just for irish americans but the testament of inclusivity that defines san francisco

i loved it was a family environment here. that made mow say san fan fire department, that's i didn't want to be. i avoided science my entire education up to becoming a paramedic. i failed my first time taking my emt registry. i hope well is nobody out there that gets discouraged if this happens. you have opportunity to take again. i d. i came back. took it, passed and continued to paramedic and pass the my registry the first time. being a woman in the fire department i am a minority here. a minority in multiple aspects. i'm a woman. biracial i'm the only black woman paramedic in the ems position. it is insane and i hope i encourage other women to join this profession that does not represent the city of san francisco. i love to show up on a scene and i can see the comfort in member who men looks like me or my family members they see me and they are comforts. i hope there are women that see me and see themselves in me and know they can do this job limp i have a 20 month old daughter at home. i would like to teach my daughter it is okay to say no as

that being said, i think procurement in san francisco is broken. i think it is broken in lots of places and one reason why when san franciscans look at the city government and see it not working and get so frustrated, well part is our brokenness of our hiring processes and the other piece of brokenness i think is procurement. i guess it would be helpful for you to put more flavor rather then just saying, it is faster, what it means to try to-why it is a actual problem for the department to do things that sound reasonable like solicit competitive bids? how could that in any way, that is supposed to drive down the coast of government and make things more efficient so you are asking a group of politicians to do something that sounds profoundly counter intuitive which is make government move more quickly by taking away the protection we think we have that make government function more efficiently and lower cost. i dopet think it does those thing but think you need to explain to us what the problem is you interest trying to solve with this. >> thank you.
