response times and both blame the problem on a lack of staffing especially for a city the size of san jose. san francisco has about 800,000 people and has one help -- 1900's one police officers were san jose's population is around 1 million with 1092 sworn officers and the candidates agree that san jose needs more police officers and where they differ is how many more the city needs and how to pay for them. >> we are spending between 40 million or $50 million a year over the past few years in overtime and if you are spending that much in overtime, you can take a portion of that and apply it to full-time ongoing policing. >> reporter: she has been endorsed by the police officers union and in recent debates suggested adding 45 new officers each year and she said the city is struggling with unfunded debt to pay for large retirement packages already owed to current officers and the city needs to be more strategic about growing the tax base before adding additional liabilities. >> i would make police staffing a priority but i won't do it in a way that is unsustainable and pushes off the burden

it is now official san jose city councilman matt mahan is the next mayor of the city of san jose, his opponent, santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez conceding today. chavez saying in a statement, though, we were not victorious, our message will carry on and live within the work i take on over the next 2 years is county supervisor. i've called matt mahan to wish him the best of luck in his two-year term as mayor san jose faces numerous challenges in the months and years ahead requiring that we all work collaboratively with the entire city council to reach meaningful and equitable solutions. as of the latest results from the santa clara county registrar of voters, mahan lead chavez by about 6,000 votes mahan, a former tech executive takes the place of current mayor sam liccardo, who a hand in this race. they had was first elected to the san jose city council in 2020. and coming up tonight on kron, 4 news at 8, matt mahan will join us live to talk about the race. what's next for him? and how he plans to leave the bay area's biggest city again, that interview tonight on kron. 4 news

the race for san jose mayor just got a bit tighter. matt mahan's lead over cindy chavez has shrunk to just under two points, and it was nearly three points just yesterday. it is an even closer contest if we had to santa clara, where fewer than 600 separate lisa gilmore from challenger anthony becker. the nfl has played a strange starring role in all of this race. the 49ers owner has put hundreds of thousands of dollars into the effort to unseat the mayor. meanwhile, miami dolphins owner stephen ross, is backing the incumbent. his real estate company is developing a project in santa clara. head over to santa clara county, where we still don't know who is taking over for libby schaff as the next mayor of oakland. shang tao is a still trailing fellow city councilmember lauren taylor, but not by quite as much as it was because you can see there, she made up about 400 votes in the latest round of ranked choice calculations. as we head to livermore, john marchand just widened his lead over mony nop, to 615 votes. the two had been on pins and
