but now here in san jose they're joining a host of other bay area cities, including san francisco, oakland and berkeley in changing its impound policy. according to our media partner, the san jose mercury news, statistics show 80 cars a week are towed from unlicensed drivers and held for a mandated month-long period. many owners abandon these cars because they're worth less than the nearly $3,000 it costs to get the car out after tickets and city fees. as early as next week, san jose police say the department will ends its 30-day impound policy when those get caught for minor violations. instead alternates, letting a licensed driver pick up the car or if it's towed, pay fees and not have to wait the 30 days. some say unlicensed drivers are a threat to public safety but the immigrant community groups in san jose are saying this is going to pave the path to much more trust between their community and law enforcement. even faith in activists groups calling for a celebration gathering in san jose next week. theresa garcia, abc 7 news. >> theresa, thank you so much. newly released documents sho

heavier amounts of rain into the san jose area. up to the north seeing a couple breaks in the weather. through the night things begin to break up. more scattered showers around the bay area. so the commute tomorrow not too bad early on but behind the cold front some very chill temperatures. low snow levels in the bay area as we look toward tomorrow night maybe down to 2500, 3000 feet. scattered showers on and off throughout the day. temperatures will be chilly outside. plan on highs only in the 40s and maybe low 50s. bundle up. it will be brisky around the bay area. few more showers possible as we head into thursday although that does not look like a big deal. partly cloudy right now on friday but we have got to watch this one close. some of the models trying to push rainfall into the bay area as we head into midnight would not like to see that on new year's eve. looks like new year's day a better chance of some showers all around the bay area. but it has been an impressive storm tonight. don't let your guard down yet. takes awhile

hexavalent chromium in san jose's water. thuy vu on how the local utility is responding. >> reporter: chromium vi can be found in a variety of sources, ground water, leather tanning operations, steel mills and now one group has found it in san jose's drinking water. >> reporter: it's clear, looks clean, but is it really? a national environmental group found unacceptable levels of toxic chromium vi, a heavy metal, in san jose's municipal drinking water supply. >> we found 1.34 part per billion in san jose. and that is significantly higher than the level that california epa is suggesting would be appropriate as protective for cancer. >> reporter: in fact, it's more than twice as much as what's considered safe by the state epa. san jose has the fifth highest amount of chromium vi among water samples taken nationwide. the cancer-causing chemical was found in nearly 90% of the 25 cities tested. >> i knew we would find it in some locations? buy did not expect it to find in this many locations. this is a nationwide problem. >> repo
